GHFA Spirit FC ready for NSW Super League in 2009
Signaling an intent to attain a finals berth in year 1, the club has appointed former Socceroo and 400 game European veteran, Jason Van Blerk in the Head Coaching Role.
Stepping aside is Director of Football Tony Walmsley who steered the club over the past 4 seasons. In taking a full-time role with the Mariners, Walmsley is confident that Van Blerk?s experience and knowledge will prove critical as he guides a quality group of players through the next stage of their development. Walmsley will continue to assist the staff and act in an advisory capacity.
The club is proud of its position in the game and its philosophy of giving young players a chance. Players like Ashley Balcomb (16) and Brendan Griffin (17) spurned opportunities to play at PL 20s level to join a senior program and gain valuable first team experience. These players are among several pushing for positions in the Mariners NYL squad and will be integral to the ongoing development of Spirit FC under Van Blerk.
NSW Instructor, David Suggett returns to the club to add a professional edge to the under 20s, while former Professional Steve Appleby takes on an assistants role. Stuart Turner makes up the technical team as Strength and Conditioning Coach.
The club won Division 1 by 12 points and went on to win the Grand Final last season and will take to the field with the same core group of players. The belief in camp is that the squad will do very well as is, but in a bold attempt to gain a finals position the club is seeking 2-3 experienced players with a high pedigree at Super League or Premier League level.
