?As a striker I?ve always wanted to play attacking football and that is something I have tried to instil in this Sydney United side,? he says.
?It was easier at the start of the season as the pitches were in better condition and with so many rained off games now being played as catch ups it has cut a lot of grounds to shreds so it has become harder to play the fluid passing brand of football I?m looking for.?
Coming back to the club this year is something the renowned striker was delighted to take up: ?I played in the both the Junior and Senior sides here and had some great times and when the opportunity came to coach the club I love I couldn?t let it pass.
?I would go so far as to say this is the only club I would probably consider coaching at this level.?
A prolific scorer over the years is it invaluable for old players to return and put something back into the game: ?I think so and like to believe that many other players should do the same.
?It would be great if the likes of Richard Plesa and Paul Bilokapic would come down on a Sunday or to a training session and have a kick around with us, especially as both are younger than me,? he says with a snigger before continuing: ?They have a lot of experience they could share with the younger guys and keeps the continuity going.
?Mark Rudan came back when he was last over from Switzerland and Tony Popovic (Sydney FC) regularly comes to watch us play and that has to be good for the game in general and not just Sydney United.?
Sitting atop the league as we come into the business end and Milicic pulls no punches when stating: ?It?s very important to finish in the Top Three because you get the double chance and we have so far put ourselves in an excellent position to finish as Minor Premiers and the best thing is that it remains in our own hands to do so and we don?t have to rely on other results going our way.
?It was a huge plus that we picked up plenty of points early on because as I?ve mentioned the pitches are getting heavier and don?t always suit our style of play but we are (at time of writing) two points clear at the top and have a better goal difference so I would be very disappointed if we didn?t go all the way and so would the rest of the team.?
Clearly the best side in the competition to date and playing some of the most exciting and effective football it has to be more than just coincidence that Milicic arriving back at the club but you cannot help but wonder the lift his presence has given what must be considered an under achieving side in recent years however, the style of football, the team shape and players attitude is that of the coach and though he won?t accept too much credit for his efforts, plenty must go his way as they are most deserved.
