Timely Reminder – Goalpost Safety

The school, in the Lake Dallas ISD, has since removed the goals in the name of safety, and officials said there are no plans to replace the soccer goals that were installed when the school was built.
Some parents, however, wonder why the goals weren’t removed sooner.
Peggy Groll knew something was wrong when her kindergarten student, Ella, came home upset.
“She said a little boy named Jose had a soccer goal fall on him and that kids were screaming and running,” Groll said.
Ella said she saw other students try to pull the soccer goal up off the boy, but it was too heavy.
The victim was taken to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where he was treated for minor injuries. He was back in school on Wednesday.
Chris Lamb, a spokesman for the district said several children were hanging on the goal post, when it came crashing down. “There were a group of about four or five students that were playing around a soccer goal,” he said. “They were told to get off.”
The district said the teacher who asked the children to get off turned away for a few seconds. When she looked back at the goal, it had toppled on the boy.
First-grader Nicholas Reeves said it was common for kids to climb on the goals. “All they do is just hang on them and the teachers tell them to get off,” he said.
The district removed the goals immediately.
“It’s kind of funny that no one thought to do anything until something happens,” said parent Katy Reeves. “It’s what usually happens, though, as they wait until something happens.”
District officials said Shady Shores was the only elementary school in the district that had had near-regulation sized soccer goals. By removing them, they believe they have eliminated the risk of another child getting hurt.
