Bill Turner Cup & Bill Turner Trophy Finals 2013 Review
Fair play was the order of the day at the 35th Bill Turner Cup finals series.
In the girls Bill Turner Trophy final, between Hunter Sports and Westfields Sports, a rare moment of sportsmanship was on display – not many were witness – when Westfields coach Brody Crane called the ball his attacker was dribbling down the sideline out.
The referee’s assistant was blocked for a clear view of Princess Ibini-Isei’s advance but Crane, and others near the sideline (including myself) saw the ball fully across the sideline – Crane called to the referee the ball was out.
The throw in was awarded to Hunter – the crucial point here is that Westfields were on the attack well inside the closing minutes of extra time. Hunter won the game 4-2 on penalties after the score was locked at 0-0 at the end of regulation and extra time.
The Bill Turner Cup Final, between Trinity Grammar and Cavendish Road, was of high quality and entertaining for the enthusiastic crowd on hand.
Trinity were deserved winners with a 2-0 victory to hoist the Cup – no easy task given the weight, not only of the cup but expectations of their respective schools, parents and peers.
Players of the series were Jacqueline Anyon-Smith, from The Hills and Nicholas Sullivan – Trinity Grammar. Luka Kmet, also of Trinity, won the player of the Bill Turner Cup final while Lorena Bugden, from Westfields, was awarded the same award in the Trophy Final.
Two new awards were introduced this year in Bill Turner’s honor – the Spirit of football award. Cavendish Road’s Frank Modole was awarded the inaugural spirit of football award and Laynee Field (Hunter) won the girls equivalent with both players rewarded for their on and off field endeavours within their team, school and the community.
