A late goal to Sam Messam, with a minute to go, saw the SUPA IGA NSW Mens 2 Premiers St George defeat the A-League’s Sydney FC 2-1 at WIN Jubilee Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The win was a further fillip for St George as they look towards next week’s Grand Final.
While it may have been an overall youthful Sydney FC, the A-League side still had the experienced Ivan Necevski, Terry McFlynn and Pascal Bosschaart in the starting side. St George were clearly a match against their higher rated opponents nonetheless and went ahead after thirteen minutes when Juan Chavez scored from the spot following a handball decision against the Sky Blues.
Sydney FC drew level in the second half when Jacob Tratt headed home a Mitch Mallia cross, but a firing Sam Messam got the better of defender Daniel Petkovski to fire home, the ball deflecting over the outstretched leg of Bosschaart into the net, with a minute remaining.
