Zonjic grabs worldwide attention for football boots
Week in and week out the football boots worn by Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Paul Pogba catch the attention of football fans all around the globe.
But last week the worldwide boot spotting limelight was on none other than Nikola Zonjic playing for Bonnyrigg white Eagles in the PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition.
Zonjic’s throwback 2012 Nike Tiempos featured on the pages of international football equipment publication ‘Soccerbible’ alongside players from the French Ligue 1, England’s Premier League and America’s Major League Soccer.
The global attention caught the unassuming centre back off guard.
“Our team manger George Mandic called me up on Monday and asked me what’s the story with your boots?
“I’ve been getting calls about them all day,” Zonjic said.
“When I finally saw the article I couldn’t believe it.
“You’ve got big name players from all around the world featured alongside my old boots.
“It’s been a great laugh. My sister has been at me because I was spotted the one week I wear my old boots.”
Zonjic said not much thought went into the now famous pair of footwear which were praised in the article for being “one of the most unique boot customisations seen this season”.
“I’ve had the boots for three to four years and I took them down to the local shoe repair guy who stitched on the tongue,” he said.
“It’s only because we were playing away from home on a different surface that I packed them in my kit bag.”
Zonjic is focused on his performances on the pitch despite the worldwide attention.
However the Bonnyrigg veteran will have to wait before he has another chance to pull on his much loved White Eagles shirt after he was sent off in the match against Rockdale.
“It was disappointing to get a red card last week. I went all of last season without a caution and to then get a red in week one was a bit of a let down,” he said
“Bonnyrigg has experienced one of the most successful periods in the clubs history of late and everyone is really fired up to continue these winning ways.
“At least with the week off I will get a chance to get my boots right for round three.”
