Doing his part to push Bankstown City FC towards hopeful promotion back into the top flight of the NPL in NSW, known as being one of the most decorated players of our time in the leagues, Chris Payne has announced that it will be his final year before hanging up the boots.

Speaking exclusively on Football NSW’s official Competition Podcast, the 33-year-old stated it was the right time to call time on his journey as a footballer.

“The boys are pretty upset that I’ve called it (retiring), but I feel like the time is right I want to be home more, I’m missing out on a lot of things, my youngest is starting football next year so I think it’s time for me to call it a day and give my wife a chance to rest.

“Winning the title would be an awesome achievement to finish it off, the end goal is to get through the year and keep enjoying it.”

Payne has enjoyed a storied career in the NPL Men’s NSW, playing for Sydney United 58, APIA Leichhardt, Manly United, CCM Academy and Bonnyrigg White Eagles.

The striker has also featured in the A-League Men’s competition for Newcastle Jets, Sydney FC and North Queensland Fury.
