E-news Opinion: Unsung heroes of the TeleChoice Premier League

Spencer_Prior

Spencer Prior and Matthew Bingley have forged an almighty partnership at the centre of the Manly United defence which has stood like a rock at times this season and is improving with each game and allows the likes of left-back, and skipper, Joey Schirripa to power forward down the flanks and help in the attack and creating scoring opportunities.
Similarly, West Sydney Berries have the towering figure of Jack Sobczyk in the centre-back role and is another who clears the lines without fuss and is ably assisted by Johnny Fotiadis, in the right back position who is often seen scampering down the line confident the back line is being marshalled by the no-nonsense Sobczyk but perhaps the best example to emerge this year has been down in the Shire at Seymour Shaw Park.
Well documented is the interplay between right-back Michael Katz and central linkman Jimmy Bakis but there is also the emerging talents of Chris Price and Nathan Ralph on the left.
Price has grown in stature this year at left-back but many feel 20-year old Ralph still has a lot to prove even though he has been playing at this level for three years and is a very accomplished left-sided player who, injury aside, will only improve further with each match after Ben Spruce has been sidelined for much of the campaign.
Sydney United are another side that have mixed experience with youth and the results under Ante Milicic are there for all to see and as for Ken Schembri at Blacktown City, a dark horse if ever there was one as yet again his side are beginning to come up with the goods but one thing all the sides realise is that without the solid foundations of a dependable defence the confidence to go forward and play your game dissipates into thin air.
Without the confidence in the back-line the midfield defend deeper pulling he forwards back with them and so creating attacking options becomes that much harder.
Uncomplicated, uncluttered and unfairly labelled as ?uncultured? at times, keep an open mind next time you are at the game, in their defence.
