Southern NSW Metropolitan sides find it tough against Canterbury District Football
The Southern NSW FC boys will grow as the season unfolds but the rude awakening of playing the top tier Football NSW competition was eye opener for Neil Wade?s U/11?s who were very competitive whilst Craig Ash?s U/12?s fell off the pace against their more classy opponent.

Sunday 1st March, 2009 saw the U/11 Southern NSW Football team play in their first game of the season in steamy conditions at home at Ison Park. Although they conceded 3 goals to nil the Southern boys continue to learn each game. The first goal from Canterbury came from a long range hit over our goal keeper Rhydian Taylor giving him no chance. Southern defended throughout the game forcing the Canterbury side to take long range shots which just cleared of the keeper each time.
Southern were able to exert some pressure themselves on Canterbury getting into their six yard box on a few occasions through Zane Wilson and Lachlan Crook but unfortunately Mitchell Folley and Alex Gwynne could not get a clear or decisive shot away. The four defenders of Rocco Battagliolo, Dean Watling, Joshua Nickl and Jake Moffat fought hard and save many opportunities created by Canterbury. A good effort from the whole team against a talented opposition team.

The season kicked off today with the U/12 Southern NSW Football team taking on Canterbury at home. A positive start to the game with the Southern players having some strong attacking moments as well as being strong in defence. Zac Hawker and Ben Brooker had good games, while Mitchell Burke, Jackson Jones and Tom Moffatt made their presence known up the left hand side. Joshua Day and Oliver Hammond played quite strong in the mid-field.
Canterbury led at the break 2-0 and although the Southern team continued the second half with some good raids on Canterbury?s goal with close chances by Sam Rose, Gareth Watkins and Alex Boardman we unfortunately did not hit the net. Lots of positives with some great technical passing and moving up the field, the team is definitely looking stronger than last year, our fitness let us down on the day with some players beginning to tire in the last quarter, this is something we must work on over the next few weeks.
