Quarter Finals day at the 2010 Centenary Cup

ce_01

GROUP A
Undefeated Southern Districts completed their mission with a determined 5-0 win over Southern Branch and secured top spot in the group.  The 2nd quarter final position was only decided when Eastern Suburbs defeated Illawarra 3-0 for their place in the finals.
GROUP B
As in Group A, Gladesville-Hornsby remained undefeated and finished in 1st place after defeating St George 3-0.  Manly-Warringah snared the 2nd spot up for grabs following their emphatic 2-0 victory over Canterbury.
GROUP C
Sutherland were the outstanding (and undefeated) team in Group C after their fine 4-1 win over Northern Tasmania and then provided a very nice sporting gesture when Sutho stalwart Bob Rivett made a generous presentation to the boys from Tassie which they will take back home with them and treasure for many years to come.  Granville cemented their claims for 2nd place in the group by emphatically defeating Bankstown 4-0.
QUARTER FINALS TIME ARRIVES!
After much mathematics and compiling of results, the finalists were named.
Cup Quarter Finals.
QF1  Southern Districts             v   Illawarra
QF2  Sutherland                        v   Eastern Suburbs
QF3  Gladesville-Hornsby          v   Bankstown
QF4  Manly-Warringah   v   Granville
QF1 began at a frantic pace with Southern Districts attacking and being rewarded with an early goal but this only fired up Illawarra who threw everything into their game and whilst Southern Districts matched them in all areas, eventually the Illawarra equalizer came, throwing the match into penalties.  Southern Districts
QF2 was a torrid affair with the Sutherland lads beginning confidently but unable to break down the defences of a plucky Eastern Suburbs outfit.  Full time came without a goal to separate the sides and again it was the penalty shoot-out that was required to find a winner and that winner eventually was Sutherland who defeated Eastern Suburbs 3p-2p.
QF3 saw Bankstown and Gladesville-Hornsby slug it out and with both sides scoring the one goal it looked like penalties again, but late in the match Gladesville-Hornsby found the elusive winner to take the match 2-1.
QF4 and Manly-Warringah began well and were looking the goods until Bankstown took control of the match and scored two fine goals to progress to the semis.
