48 Grassroots clubs ready for ‘Fairytale’ Cup

It’s been dubbed the ‘Fairytale’ Cup by the 48 grassroots clubs from across NSW who are preparing for the ultimate challenge as the 2013 Waratah Cup takes centre stage on Wednesday 27th of March.
Known to many Australian football pundits as NSW’s answer to the English FA Cup, the stage has been sent for 48 clubs set to do battle against various Men’s State League 2 sides in round 1 of this prestigious knockout tournament.
2013 has seen a record number of entrants as combined with the 48 grassroots clubs, a further two from Capital Football, eleven from Men’s State League 2, twelve from Men’s State League 1 and twelve clubs from the IGA NSW National Premier League Mens 1 and SUPA IGA NSW National Premier Leagues Mens 2 competitions rounding it to 97 teams.
Football NSW’s Head of Football Phil Brown perfectly summed up what this Cup competitions means for these hungry grassroots clubs.
“It is great to see so many grassroots clubs stepping up to test their skills against the National Premier League and Football NSW State League teams.
“Every year the number of local team entries increases, which demonstrates a growing awareness of the integrated talented player pathway, and an eagerness of aspiring local clubs to demonstrate their ability to compete at the next level.”
Association club representative teams from Bankstown, Macarthur, Eastern Suburbs, Canterbury, St George, Granville, Blacktown, Nepean, Manly, Sutherland, Northern Suburbs, Southern Districts and Football South Coast will be hoping their teams do their bit in progressing to round 2 of the knockout tournament where they could face Men’s State League One and SUPA IGA NSW National Premier Leagues Mens 2 sides before round 3 commences where the ‘big boys’ enter the fray namely the IGA NSW National Premier Leagues Mens 1 clubs.
A whopping 32 matches will take place during round 1 where certain fairytales may come true for these eager Grassroots clubs ready to take that next step in what could be the beginning of something special for these teams and its players and officials.
