Football NSW was saddened to hear the news of the unfortunate passing of Alexander “Lal” Byers, a prominent coaching figure in football in NSW.
Known to many as a staunch Futsal advocate, Lal was a well-respected character that brought plenty to the game and converted everyday kids into champions by teaching them the values of hard work, team mate and self-belief.
He coached an impressive number of NSW state teams to success with countless national titles, toured the world coaching Australian girls and womens teams ranging from U12s right through to senior women and was a stalwart in the unbeatable Sydney Hornets club side of the late 90s.
Having beat many rounds of heart surgery, Lal finally lost his battle with cancer on the 1st of June 2013.
The football and Futsal community showed up in force to farewell a great man at his funeral this week.
“Mr Football”, you will be greatly missed and never forgotten by the many footballers that you coached who are forever indebted to you for your amazing football brain, patience and passion.
