Round 6 of the IGA NPL NSW Mens 1 Grade 20s was carried out over the Easter weekend, closing with a clash between Rockdale City Suns FC and Marconi Stallions FC in the Match of the Round.

The weekend also saw a high scoring game between Sydney United 58 FC and South Coast Wolves, with Sydney United coming out on top.

MATCH OF THE ROUND

Rockdale City Suns FC 3-2 Marconi Stallions FC at Ilinden Sports Centre

Five goals in 23′ minutes and the odd one from the spot saw Rockdale City grab a dramatic 3-2 over Marconi Stallions.

It was an 82’ minute penalty that saw Rockdale City Suns FC regain their lead, when Aaron Davis converted to put his side ahead for the final time after a crazy final half an hour.

A perfect autumn day was the backdrop of an important game, with both teams needing to grab those valuable three points.

The first half was a series of missed opportunities from the two sides, and both keepers were right in the thick of it.

Rockdale’s Chris Denkov received a beautiful long ball from David Adjassou on the left setting himself up for a perfect opportunity on goal, before spurning the ball wide of the post.

Marconi followed, creating opportunities on goal but unable to follow through with a goal.

It was end to end stuff and great viewing for the neutral.

A corner in the 21’ minute saw Stallion’s Blair Brown head the ball from the top of the box, but he sent the ball wide.

In the 30’ minute Rockdale’s Cameron Solevski crossed the ball into the box from the left but it was easily cleaned up by the Marconi defence.

A perfect opportunity for the home side came in the 39’ minute.

On the left, Denkov drew the keeper and defence out, finding an unmarked Adjassou at the top of box, but he failed to take advantage of an empty goal, and pushed the ball narrowly past the post.

Rockdale grabbed their first goal in the 59’ minute and it was the prelude to a manic 23′ minutes of play.

A ball down the centre of field found an unmarked Solevski who slotted the ball past the outstretched hands of Marconi’s keeper, and former Rockdale gloveman Aaron Liddell to grab the lead.

Two minutes later the home side doubled their score.

From a corner, substitute Sinan Dilber was first to the ball and found space to volley the ball sending it to the back of the net in the 61’ minute.

Just like that, Rockdale was two up, but in the blink of an eye Marconi stole one back.

A mistake in the Rockdale defence saw Marconi’s Jack Fulton grab his first of two goals in the 64’ minute, receiving a cross from the wing, before beating the keeper David Bradasevic.

The crowd hadn’t time to draw breath.

Rockdale had the opportunity to put the match to bed in the 72’ minute, when a very well taken free kick by Adjassou hit the post, rebounding to the feet of an unmarked Denkov who failed to take advantage.

Marconi redoubled their efforts and found their equaliser in the 79′ minute.

A free kick into the penalty box found Fulton who finished well to claim his and Marconi’s second goal to level the scores.

It was a Lazarus-like recovery from Marconi but unfortunately it wasn’t to last.

With only eight minutes remaining, the home side were awarded a penalty, converted by Davis, to undo all Marconi’s hard work and claim all three points for Rockdale.

Marconi Stallions coach Pat Marando was disappointed in the result and is hoping there will be some improvements for next weekends big clash with Bonnyrigg White Eagles FC.

“There will be players coming back from injury and hopefully this will allow for some continuity and make the difference for next weekend," Marando said.
