THE second half of the season has begun, with Manly United FC continuing to lead the table after beating Marconi Stallions FC in the Match of the Round on Sunday afternoon.
MATCH OF THE ROUND
Manly United FC 3-2 Marconi Stallions FC at Cromer Park
The stakes were high for both teams, Manly United FC sitting in pole position, while Marconi Stallions FC found themselves at the foot of the table.
A hat-trick of goals from Dejan Pandurevic including a sensational strike in the 62’ minute saw Manly United FC triumph over Marconi Stallions FC in a high scoring fixture.
The home side commenced the scoring, grabbing their first goal in the 16’ minute.
Manly’s Christopher Arditti produced a beautiful cross threading it through to Jack Green in the centre who found Dejan Pandurevic on the right, before shooting the ball into the left corner of the far post.
Within ten minutes, Manly had doubled their lead, leaving Marconi’s with a mountain to climb if they were to grab all three points.
A free kick some 25 metres out saw Pandurevic back in the limelight, scoring with a powerful shot, past the Marconi keeper, Nathan Campbell.
But the visiting side were long overdue for their second win of the season and were on a mission to secure at least one point.
They say third time’s a charm and in the 35’ minute Marconi’s Marco Sama pulled one back after a series of earlier attempts.
On the left Joshua Brookes successfully drew the keeper out and a clever cutback found Sama inside the box, before sending the ball into an empty goal. It was just what the away team needed as they headed into the sheds 2-1 down.
Playing with a lot more urgency, Marconi drew level early in the second half. Brookes, inside the box, found Sama who once again slotted the ball into the right corner of the goal, past Tonu Liiband to grab a double for the game.
Moments later and this time it was Manly’s Thomas Morrissey that almost gave the home team the lead again, with a wonderful shot outside the penalty area that was goalbound, but stopped by an excellent save by Campbell at the near post.
With both teams desperate to grab the three points, it was Manly who was triumphant, grabbing the goal of the match.
Past the hour mark, Hamish Galbraith sent a beautiful ball up the line to Morrissey on the right who passed square to an unmarked Pandurevic in the centre of the box.
The pass was clean and well timed and with just the Marconi keeper, Campbell to beat, Pandurevic coolly converted to bring up his third and his teams final goal of the match.
The final ten minutes saw both teams having shots on goal, with Marconi in search of an equaliser and Manly looking to extend their lead.
In the final minute, a Marconi free kick into the home side’s crowded penalty box eventuated to nothing, with Manly’s keeper Liiband denying Marconi of a point.
Manly United FC coach Louis Dimitropoulos thought his side were lucky to walk away with all three points.
“Marconi played well today, they caused us some problems and Marco Sama is always a threat. But in saying that, the boys responded well," Dimitropoulos said.
