Parramatta FC recruit Steven Wright expects his new side to shock several teams as they make their return to the PS4 National Premier League NSW Men’s 1 competition this weekend.
Wright joined Parramatta after four years at the Bankstown Berries and has trained the house down in what he described as a “very tough” pre-season.
The centre back had a taste of top grade action when he was an under-20s player at Sydney United five years ago before playing in the men’s 2 competition and is raring to go for his new side.
“Cosi (Frank Cosentino) contacted me at the back end of last season to ask me to join Parramatta if they were promoted,” he said.
“I had a small taste of first grade with Sydney United and I am looking forward to testing myself against the best now that I am a bit more mature and know my game.
“Last year’s two centre backs in Pat Gatt and Josh Symons have been kept in the squad so obviously it will be tough for me.
“But I have started nearly every game in the pre-season so I just want to cement my place and remain in this competition.”
Parramatta FC have had mixed results in the pre-season and open their campaign against the Marconi Stallions at Marconi Stadium this Saturday night.
Despite being written off by pundits, the 25-year-old is confident the team’s work ethic will have them in good stead this season.
“A lot of people are writing us off and expecting us to get relegated but I think we will be far from that,” Wright said.
“We have a couple of players from St George FC who got relegated and most of the boys have been on the fringe of this competition.
“We all work very hard on the park and I think that is what will shock some teams and jag a few results.
“Obviously we will be happy to stay up but I think anything short of a mid-table to top five finish we will be disappointed.”
