The continual development of referees in regional areas was certainly the theme as Football NSW staged two special L3 and L4 Referees Courses in Mudgee last weekend.

Football NSW Referees Manager Kris Griffiths-Jones assisted in the running of the two-day course and was pleased with the turn out and delivery shown by the aspiring referees on show in Mudgee.

The L4 Referees course is the first qualification for a new official wanting to become a referee.

Nine participants took part in the special course run by Griffiths-Jones as the figure further increased the registered number of referees in Mudgee to 31 increasing the coverage of officials in the area.

The L3 Referees course was also staged and was attended by 15 referees which was close to 70% of its referee members that took part in being further upskilled.

The current Hyundai A-League referee rated the enthusiasm and drive shown by the various referees who were put through their paces during the two day courses.

“To go to Mudgee and see the enthusiasm amongst existing referees and new aspiring referees was fantastic.

“I am happy that my role at Football NSW enables me to make a positive impact within the region.

“The coaching the referees get currently from the Mudgee Referees Branch is second to none and you can see this clearly with the knowledge and skill set the referees currently have.

“I am positive we will see a continual increase in match official numbers and it won’t be long before we witness Mudgee referees progressing to the National level”.

Peter Mitchell, Mudgee Referees Association Appointments Officer, was delighted with how the courses unfolded and hoped for more to occur in the area in the not too distant future.

“I wanted to say a big thank you to Kris and his team for last weekend and express our gratitude for taking time to help out the country clubs.

“Every participant from both courses stated how great it was to have had a Hyundai A-League referee take time to run courses and how much they have learnt from them.

“The flow on from these courses has been great and we should gain at least ten new referees from this exercise.

“We as a Club and Referees Association hope that you continue to visit country places and pass on your knowledge to younger and older up and coming referees.”
