‘Going Purple’ for Pancreatic Cancer

Since its inception in 2015 the ‘Going Purple’ Campaign for Pancreatic Cancer has truly ‘gone’ places.

Founder of the campaign and governor of the Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation Isabella DiManno envisioned an empowering way to bring about awareness and start a conversation on the impact of ‘Pancreatic Cancer.’

DiManno was confronted with the affects of this cancer after watching her fiancé mum fight this cancer in 2014.

“Pancreatic Cancer, has one of the lowest survival rates of all the cancers, with only 8% of those diagnosed surviving beyond 5 years.  My fiancé who lost his mum to this cancer in 2015 and I knew extremely little about the cancer, the symptoms and why the survival rates were so low. So was birthed the social awareness campaign ‘shooting for a goal’ to lift the profile of Pancreatic Cancer in a positive manner. We want to turn the code we love purple for one weekend every to support those who are battling.”

The bespoke campaign encourages team work with teams defending, attacking and shooting for a goal at their local weekend game and to double the number of Pancreatic Cancer survivors by 2020.

Hills Hawks Football Club President Ian Robertson commented on the success their campaign was after reading about it on the Football NSW page last year.

“Teams across all age groups participated from Under 6’s to All Age to Premier League as well as our Club Committee. The players and their supporters really enjoyed wearing the purple socks on the day to support the campaign. We will continue to support this wonderful fundraiser initiative and we anticipate an even higher rate of participation this coming season.”

Football NSW are proud to be supporting a wonderful community initiative, combining the wonderful code of football with truly ground-breaking campaigns such as the: ‘Going Purple’ – Football socks campaign for the Avner Panceatic Cancer Foundation.

The Campaign is beginning its relaunch this year with the event scheduled for the weekend of June 23rd and June 24th 2018.

It’s simple and easy for any team and club to participate with a simple change of your local club socks to purple socks for one weekend!

Every age group in every club is more than welcome to be involved and shoot for a goal to change Pancreatic Cancer.
