Football NSW Celebrates 2023 Women’s World Cup Bid Success

Football NSW has applauded the decision by FIFA that Australia and New Zealand will host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup following the announcement this morning.

Football NSW CEO Stuart Hodge said hosting such a spectacle of that magnitude involving our women’s game is a dream come true for the sport, country, state, players, participants and fans alike.

“It’s a great day for football in NSW and Australia. The tournament will be a catalyst for the further development of women’s football in NSW and Australia, creating a profound and enduring legacy for the women’s game.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup is the pinnacle for any female footballer to play and we look forward to welcoming the best teams from across the globe as well as the best players participating in our backyard along with our Matildas.

“Hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup will provide us all with a great opportunity to accelerate the growth of women’s football and increase investment into football facilities, particularly those that are female friendly.”

Hodge acknowledged the incredible work of Football Federation Australia and the wonderful support of the Australian Football Community that led to a successful bid.

Hodge paid tribute to the Federal and NSW Governments for their leading role in achieving this amazing result for the sport.

“The Federal and NSW Governments led the way in providing support for the bid.

“We look forward to working closely with Government and the FFA to capitalise on the many opportunities for football and wider societal benefits that will be created by hosting such a significant world event.”

Over 65,000 females (22%) are registered to play winter football with clubs across NSW, growing at a significant rate every year.
