Volunteer Spotlight: Zac Farah

He’s known by everyone at Granville Waratah SFC as the man that does it all, but Zac Farah really is a multi-talented football volunteer.

The 42-year-old has spent the past five successive seasons in the Granville District Soccer Football Association doing his part in promoting his beloved club, namely the Granville Waratah.

A jack of all trades, the Club Secretary and Coach has worn many caps at the club celebrating 120 years of existence this year, in ensuring each of their participants are looked after and are ready for their matches.

“At the moment I’m the Club Secretary and a Coach but due to a shortage in club volunteers, I’m also filling in as a Registrar, Canteen Manager, Social Media Administrator and Competitions Secretary.

“In addition to this, I also set up and pack fields on match days, I coach and I of course play.”

With only 2 volunteers at the club, you can understand why Farah bears the brunt of what already is a heavy work schedule for the passionate football fan who has adored the sport ever since he could kick a ball as a 5-year-old.

“I grew up in a football environment, both of my older brothers, family and friends were involved in the game for as long as I remember.

“I loved the game, as I grew older the love of the game grew bigger for me.”

The devastating impact COVID played on clubs especially at volunteer level is for there to be seen by many at Granville Waratah.

Farah is living proof of a volunteer that literally lives and breathes for the sport but has pleaded to the football audience that they need more hands-on deck.

“Volunteers are very important for our game as a whole.

“At the moment we are feeling the impact of not having more volunteers on board at the Waratah club.

“At our level, clubs are built around volunteers and cannot function without them.

“Volunteers are what make clubs flourish and grow which in return impacts the world game in a better light.

“With more volunteers comes new objectives to kick-off at the club.

“We have focused this year on the importance of volunteers and how the community plays a big role in their clubs.

“We are still highlighting this message to our members and are trying to get more volunteers involved.

“We have also focused on positive attitude in the game and how to attract the right players to help grow the game.”
