Football NSW has concluded its investigation into allegations of racial and homophobic abuse by spectators during the Round 3 NPL NSW Men’s match between Sydney United 58 FC (SU58FC) and APIA Leichhardt FC (APIA) on 19 February 2023.

SU58 FC was charged with four offences related to alleged racial and/or homophobic abuse by its supporters.

The charges related to the alleged abuse of three APIA players and one of the Match Officials.

The Football NSW General Purposes Tribunal (GPT) found two of the four offences proven and issued the following sanctions against SU58 FC:

  1. A fine of $5,000 payable within 30 days;
  2. A deduction of three (3) competition points in the NPL NSW Men’s First Grade Competition; and
  3. One SU58 FC home match to be played behind closed doors.

In relation to sanctions two and three, these are suspended for the balance of the 2023 Season and imposed only if SU58 FC is found guilty this season of any similar offence.  The imposition of these sanctions will be in addition to any sanctions imposed for the subsequent offences.

SU58 FC has seven days within which to appeal the GPT’s determination.

Football NSW adopts a zero-tolerance policy to racist and homophobic abuse at sanctioned events and is committed to promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all football participants.
