Friday night 31st May 2013 at Dural Sport and Leisure Centre the Women’s Futsal team from Sutherland Shire had the honour of playing in the opening game of the 2013 hummel F League.

What was a first for Women’s Futsal and the Sutherland Shire our team started the match well versus a very experienced Dural Warriors team.

Defence was the name of the game for our young Sutherland team as they ventured into the first ever National League match for Women’s Futsal in recent history.

Sustained back court defence lead by no.21 Megan Embleton from the Sutherland denied numerous attacking attempts by the Warriors. The first half brought only a handful of chances at goal for both teams. Pressure by Sutherland on the Warriors defence saw an unlucky yellow card shown to no.18 Alex Smith in the 16th minute.

In the 21st minute the Warriors Coach Ben Pollock called a time out in an attempt to settle his team into a rhythm that would potentially earn them a goal before half time. But rock solid goal keeping from Amanda Seskin for Sutherland kept the Warriors out. The score at half time was dead locked at 0 – 0.

After the break the Sutherland team started strong however Warriors broke the stalemate in the 28th minute of the match as a result of Sutherland being caught high up the court. Despite the goal Sutherland was on a high as it continued its charge to match it at this level.

Raegan Deeley no.19 of Sutherland made her debut in the 33rd minute of the match almost stealing a goal with her first touch of the ball. Sutherland player Alex Smith had the chance of a life time in the 38th minute to score from right in front but unfortunately the ball shot off her foot wide of the Warrior’s open goal.

Sutherland Coach Glenn ‘Woody’ Woodhouse called a time out in the 45th minute to rally the troops in a last ditch effort to peg a goal back. It almost worked because in the 48th minute of the match Brooke Conroy no. 15 of Sutherland hit the post with her shot on the Warriors goal.

With only minutes to go and the Warriors being 1-0 up the Sutherland team kept up the pressure but in the in the last kick of the match Warriors no.14 Kathryn Mlandineo scored to make the final score 2-0.

At the end of the game Sutherland Shire Futsal President said “we’re very proud of the team for matching it at this level and proving that Women can play at F League level as well as the Men”.

Sutherland Coaches ‘Woody’ and Glenn ‘Tank’ Errington both said “of how proud they were of the team rising to the occasion”. They went on to say to the Sutherland players at the end of the game of “how proud they were of the effort considering a short preparation time”. The player of the match was announced as our goal keeper Amanda Seskin.
