AWD Tournament Raising the Bar

In what is rapidly becoming one of the major ‘must-see’ parts of the FFA National Futsal Championships, the Athlete’s with Disability (AWD) tournament continued to go from strength to strength showcasing the skills and abilities of some outstanding talent.

2014 will mark the fourth year that the AWD tournament has taken place at the FFA event and last year’s winners, Queensland, will be back to defend their crown won in some style against the traditional powerhouse that is Southern NSW. Indicating the quality that was on show in 2013 was the fact that the Player of the Tournament, Sebastian Saura, did not feature for either finalist but turned on some superb performances for NSW Lightning. And with the home-town heroes from the ACT determined to make their mark this time around we are set for another humdinger of a competition.

“The AWD section of the FFA National Futsal Championships continues to be a vital part of the week-long celebration of Futsal in Canberra,” Tournament Manager Jesamine Wheeler said. “The skills that they bring to the court light up the week and you can see the enjoyment that the players, coaching staff and spectators get in watching these incredible athletes displaying their Futsal prowess. As usual we aim to nurture and grow this aspect of the tournament in order to make it an integral part of the championships.”

The AWD teams will play their fixtures at the AIS throughout the tournament with the Grand Final scheduled for the AIS Arena on Friday afternoon. As an added incentive the best players at the FFA National Futsal Championships will be selected for the Australian team to compete in the forthcoming INAC Futsal World Cup.
