SYDNEY Olympic FC claimed a 3-2 victory against Sutherland Sharks FC in the Match of the Round for the Grade 20s competition.

Round eight saw a big win for St George FC move them up the table and a another win for Bonnyrigg White Eagles FC allow them to hold onto their lead.

MATCH OF THE ROUND

Sydney Olympic FC 3-2 Sutherland Sharks FC at Belmore Sports Ground

After dropping their lead twice in the match, an 89’ minute goal gave Sydney Olympic victory against Sutherland Sharks FC at Belmore Sports Ground in an end-to-end game between two evenly matched sides.

In the 5’ minute the home side took the lead, when a defensive error on the right by Sutherland saw Olympic’s Christopher Godoy-Bascur perfectly chip the ball into the far corner.

Constant runs wide by Godoy-Bascur proved dangerous for the home side, but Olympic were unable able to capitalise on the many chances created.

Sutherland fought back through Jordan Hughes in the 15’ minute when his shot on goal from the top of the box was saved by Kresimir Kardum. The ball, however, remained alive and Jayden Koulizakis created the next opportunity for Sutherland, but his effort went wide of the post.

Next, Olympic’s James Andrew did well to pass the Sutherland defence and made a confident cross into the box, which only required a simple tap in by the home side, but Olympic failed to take advantage.

Twenty minutes after going behind, Sutherland Sharks had claimed the equaliser.

This time it was Sutherland’s Koulizakis who found the back of the net.

Koulizakis, receiving a cross from Spiridion Kakavelis on the left, beautifully struck the ball into the far corner, passed the outstretched Kardum.

Scores were level heading into the half time interval.

From an Olympic free kick, Godoy-Bascur had another chance on goal in the 56’ minute, but not enough composure in the box saw him send his shot flying over the crossbar.

It was Olympic’s goal in the 66’ minute that changed the intensity and complexity of the game.

A clumsy tackle just inside the box from Sutherland’s Jacob Bandur saw the home side awarded a penalty; Andrew stepped up and calmly slotted the ball home, giving Sydney Olympic a crucial lead.

However, it wasn’t too long before the visitor’s to grab their second, after the referee awarded a penalty against Amadou’s Kelita who hand balled in the box and was shown a red card in the 74’ minute.

Sutherland’s substitute, Vincent Giannini took the penalty, placing the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net and for the second time in the match, the visiting side had come from behind to claim an equaliser.

The sending off should have tipped the balance Sutherland’s way, however Olympic maintained their composure.

With only ten men, an opportunity to reclaim the lead presented itself in the 83’ minute, but it was not to be.

Joshua Tanner’s shot was parried by keeper Andrew Depta, only to find Michael Trajkovski who again found Tanner unmarked, but he failed to convert with his second attempt.

With the clock ticking down and the scores locked at 2-2, it looked as if the points would be shared, however Sydney Olympic showed determination to grab a last-minute winner with Godoy-Bascur grabbing his second for the game.

Sotiri Kagaras, cleverly drawing Depta out of the penalty box, cut back to Godoy-Bascur at the top of the box who drilled the ball into the corner of the net.

Michael Urukalo believes his team are making good progress.

"We showed a lot of character with only ten men," he said.

"I don’t think the result was a true indication of our performance, but we were very disciplined."
