Sutherland Shire Association side Loftus Yarrawarrah Rovers recently held a special ‘Golden Jubilee Match’ against Canterbury Association’s Earlwood Wanderers as an initiative that took shape during the club’s 50th year anniversary last year.

Based on the original laws of football from 1863 known as the Cambridge rules, Loftus Oval was struck with heritage fever as the match was played in traditional uniforms as well as different goal posts. The Cambridge rules came into effect when a group of cricketers got together and wanted to keep fit during the winter months.

This was the second time in successive seasons the club took part with this initiative of playing by the Cambridge rules.

It was a fantastic outing for both with a charity element connected to this special match.

Loftus Yarrawarrah Rovers President John Lane stated that thanks to this initiative, $1200 was raised for a special Charity.

“The reason we called it a Charity Shield match was that a month before the scheduled time to play this match, a three year old boy passed away who had an attachment to our club.

“His 6-year-old brother played for our club and his father was the coach.

“The parents asked for no flowers for the funeral as they wished for donations to be made to ‘Sids and Kids’, a charity dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood as well as supporting bereaved families.

“From this we decided to support this initiative and sold a special history of the game A5 printed booklet that was compiled by one of our committee members where we made $1200 which was donated to the charity.”
