Ex-Foxes keeper Henderson buzzing
The unimaginable happened on Tuesday 3rd of May when 5000-1 side Leicester City stole world headlines for taking out the Premiership in the English Premier League, a club current PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s goalkeeper Paul Henderson played for five seasons.
The current Sydney Olympic star was part of the Foxes setup when he joined the club way back in 2005 and made over 60 appearances during a period which saw them compete in the English Championship in his first two years before the club was relegated to League One – but then winning promotion back into the Championship in his final season.
“They were one of my best seasons while I was in Europe, playing at Leicester City.
“I will never forget the great times I spent there, the city was fantastic and the people were really passionate about their football team.”
Understandably, Henderson was over the moon when Claudio Ranieri’s men were crowned Champions of England after a phenomenal season which will see them take part in next year’s UEFA Champions League also.
“I was driving to the gym and I stopped watching the match when they were down 2-0.
“I then spoke to my mother after I finished up and she told me did you see Leicester won the Premiership? – I couldn’t believe it.
“It was unbelievable and a story many will talk about for years to come.
“For such a small club to accomplish something as big as this will go down as one of the greatest achievements of any team of all time.
“The city and people will be in dream land.
“They love this club, I remember we were getting twenty thousand to our matches in the English Championship, such was the passion of the locals.
“It’s as if they’ve celebrated Christmas ten times over, a remarkable story.”
Henderson was part of a Leicester City side that heralded a number of other Australian players such as former Socceroos Patrick Kisnorbo, Danny Tiatto, former Australian U20s star James Wesolowski and Tasmanian born goalkeeper Alex Cisak.
He also played under the coaching likes of Craig Levein, Ian Holloway, Nigel Pearson, Nigel Worthington, Gary Megson and Martin Allen.
“It was a crazy period for the club but as I said earlier, it was an experience I would love to relive again and again.
“Playing at what it was known back then as Walkers Stadium was amazing and something I will never forget.”
The 40-year-old goalkeeper continues to turn back the clock as he continues to churn out brilliant performances for Sydney Olympic under the sticks and will be one to look out for once more as the club take on Illawarra Premier League outfit Wollongong United on Wednesday evening at Belmore Sports Ground (7:30pm) for round 6 of the Westfield FFA Cup – a victory which will see them move one step closer to a Round of 32 spot.
