It was a weekend full of shocks and surprises as Southern Branch FC and Nepean FC both picked up big victories.

Marconi Stallions also had a welcome return to form in our Match of the Round.

Match of the Round: Marconi Stallions 2 defeated Gladesville Ravens 0

Marconi Stallions picked up their first three points since round two with a clinical 2-nil victory over Gladesville Ravens today at Marconi Stadium.

Two goals in the either half were enough for the Stallions whose attack finally clicked into gear making them a threat to the rest of the PS4 NPL 2 NSW Women’s competition. Gladesville continue to search for their first win of the campaign.

The Stallions came out hungry from the opening whistle as they tested Gladesville Ravens shot stopper Kasia Glennie within the first 120 seconds.

Katie Hensman continued the battering on Glennie’s goal as she burst into the area on five minutes but wasn’t able to put her shot on target.

It didn’t take much longer for the opener to come though, as Joanna Burgess produced a moment of magic in the ninth minute. The striker chipped the ball for herself before dinking it into the net for 1-nil.

Hensman couldn’t keep herself out of action with a  pair of chances to add to the scoreline. First her header went straight at the keeper then a one-on-one was scuffed at the last moment.

Marconi Stallions looked much more like the side they promised to be at the start of the season as they continued to find space in behind the Ravens backline.

Gladesville Ravens had some success with most of their attack came from Isabella Breukelaar and Jemima Davidson link up down the right flank.

The duo created their best chance of the game when Breukelaar sprinted down the right, past several defenders but there wasn’t anyone to profit from her good work.

Hensman had a final chance before the break to make it two but as she strode towards goal Glennie was brave coming off her line and smothering the chance to keep it at 1-nil.

After the break most of the pattern continued as Stallions peppered the goal relentlessly. It took until after the hour mark for the resistance to be broken.

From a broken piece of play – Ceyda Cambaz pounced on the ball and vollyed it first time past Glennie to make it 2-nil.

Both teams traded some chances as the contest opened up but Marconi were able to see out the rest of the contest.

Afterwards a delighted Marconi official enjoyed the return to form of his side.

" The team formed well as a unit. The combinations have started to come together after a lackluster pre-season. The combination of experience in [Joanna] Burgess with youngsters like Katie [Hensman] was good to see.

Conversely Ravens coach Jose De Costa was happy despite the result.

" It was a tough day at the office. Girls tried real hard and played some good football but Marconi were clinical with their chances." He said.

The damage for the home side was done by a double to Courtney Holmwood and scoresheet mainstay Madeliene Costanzo got her sixth of the season.

After a few down performances, it was a welcome return to form for the Mariners whose spirited performance was highlighted by a late equaliser to snatch a point.

Southern Branch FC 5 defeated Inter Lions SC 0

Southern Branch have secured their first victory of the season in sensational style with a 5-nil romp over Inter Lions SC at South Nowra Sporting Complex.

Georgina McDonnell was the star of the show with a bag full of goals to put a Lions defense still rusty from the bye to the sword.

Her four goals earned her the player of the match honours as Paris Ford netted her second goal of the season to round out the five star display.

For Inter Lions SC it will be a disappointing result as the sides around them were able to pick up results across the weekend.
