Female football ever growing at Southern Districts FA

Women’s football continues to grow in Sydney’s south-west and the Southern Districts Soccer Football Association (SDSFA) is helping to continue that growth with the introduction of Mums Football.

The concept was introduced to in 2018 to great acclaim and offers new mums a great way to get their fitness back and find new mates in a friendly environment.

Hosted at the SDSFA’s Hoxton Park Reserve on Wednesday nights the 7-a-side competition has been hailed as a great new way for soccer mums to get up and about and reclaim their fitness.

The idea was born when local club Hinchinbrook Sports Club president Colin Reddish spotted some mums exercising while their kids were playing soccer.

“We were looking for a way to get the mums more involved in the club,” he told the SDSFA website upon the start of the competition in November.

“We thought if they’re interested in it, let’s get them more understanding about football and the best way for them to do that is for them to play the game.”

SDSFA Gino Marra confirmed that after the success of the summer season, the association would be bringing it back for the 2019 winter season.

The competition fits perfectly with the associations aims of continuing to grow the women’s game in the area, alongside the incredibly successful men’s and boy’s competitions already being run.

The SDSFA is home to 35 local clubs and 7,780 players across all competitions.

That number is set to grow in 2019 and prospective players – whether they are completely new to the sport or looking to return to football this year – will be sure to find a club close to home with teams ready for new players.
