Onwards and upwards at Sutherland Shire Football Association
The return to the beautiful game couldn’t have come at a better time for the thousands of keen footballers set to return to the parks across the Sutherland Shire Football Association as Grassroots season clicks into full gear.
Sutherland Shire Football Association Treasurer Giulio di Stefano along with the board were eagerly awaiting the new year ahead following a 2020 season that was riddled with a world pandemic.
“In light of how football in the Sutherland Shire was impacted by COVID-19 in 2020, the SSFA is hoping that we will be returning to a more “normal” 2021 football season for our 19,000 players, their coaches and managers and of course their supporters.
“Our learnings from last season will hopefully build towards a highly successful season for all to enjoy.
“We will again be offering the opportunity for our boys and girls, men and women to play in competitions which range from the Under 6’s right through to our Over 40 Women’s and Over 45 Men’s leagues.”
In what’s been viewed as one of the major highlights to watch out for in 2021, di Stefano was delighted to break the news that the Association’s well run Special Needs club/program the Sutherland Titans would make its comeback this year.
“We would like to welcome back the Sutherland Titans, our special needs Club, who were the most impacted from last year’s COVID riddled season.
“For the safety of their players and supporters, the Titans were not able to participate in the 2020 football season but 2021 will no doubt see the program in full swing once again.”
With as many as 26 clubs participating in the Sutherland Shire Football Association, di Stefano stressed the importance of seeing more volunteers and referees join in on the fun in what will be a massive year for the sport all round.
“We at SSFA offer the opportunity for everyone to participate in the world game in staying fit, healthy active and most importantly supporting our local community and staying socially connected.
“As with all community sporting Clubs, they are built on the support and hard work of volunteers. The more volunteers the better as it distributes the workload of Clubs making them work and function more effectively and efficiently.
“Don’t be afraid to put you hand up to help whether it’s around the Club or coaching your sons’ or daughters’ team, now’s the time to join.
“Love them or not, we need referees also. Whether you are young or not so young, male or female, we need referees. Just remember, a game can’t proceed without a referee.”
