It’s been a huge month for Dunbar Rovers’ rising young Under 16’s Torres Strait Islander star Obinna Nwamadi.

Away from his NPL Youth League duties, the former Marrickville Red Devils Academy junior will represent NSW in the inaugural NAIDOC Cup match against Northern NSW Football on Awabakal land at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Wednesday 6th July and it is an honour the youngster cannot wait to achieve.

“I am from the Dauareb tribe of Mer Island in the Torres Strait (North QLD).

“Torres Strait Islander people, along with the Aboriginal people on the mainland are our two Indigenous groups. I am proud of my heritage because it is who I am.

“I carry my culture every day and I’m  happy that I get to share this with the Dunbar Rovers and  wider community during NAIDOC week.

“I am honoured to play in the NAIDOC Cup and hope to make the Club, my elders and island community proud.”

Young Obinna sits in pretty cool company as NBA star Patty Mils and of course the famous Eddie Mabo are the two well known Torres Strait Islander identities hailing from the same place as the young football star.
