A new Sapphire Cup Champion will be crowned when the Northern Tigers take on Sydney University SFC on Wednesday, 21st of August at Valentine Sports Park.

Finalists in 2023, the Tigers will do battle with the 2022 NPL Women’s NSW Premiers, Sydney University, for the honour of being the second club to lift the trophy.

The Northern suburbs outfit won its way to the final following a 2-1 victory over the NWS Spirit FC. Ella Abdul-Massih got an early goal for Spirit before a second half blitz from the Tigers saw Hannah McNulty and Lily McMahon grab the goals which booked the club’s spot for its second successive Cup final.

The Tigers will be hoping to go one step further after losing out to inaugural Sapphire Cup winners APIA Leichhardt FC 2-1 in 2023.

University grabbed their Cup Final spot thanks to a third minute Amelia Feeney goal to defeat Sydney Olympic 1-nil, who had Tiana Jaber sent off for two cautions late in the second half.

The two teams met earlier this year in Round 13 of the NPL Women’s NSW competition, where a six goal thriller ended with a 3-3 draw, providing a great deal of promise for an exciting Cup Final.

The likes Hannah McNulty, Shadeene Evans, Jade Mcatamney, Lily McMahon, Talia Kapetanellis, Amelia Feeney, Jaime Beaufils and Ashley Irwin will be among the players to look out for when the teams meet on Wednesday evening.

Those unable to attend the Final can catch the match live and exclusive on Football NSW’s YouTube Channel, with Nikola Pozder and Will Konstantinidis providing commentary for the match.

Launching in 2023, the Sapphire Cup replicates the existing men’s Waratah Cup knockout competition, deriving its name from the former ‘NSW Sapphires’ team who were part of the former Women’s National Soccer League.
