Homebush’s State Sports Centre played host to the 2015 Special Needs Futsal certificate as thirteen coaches took part in what was an insightful course conducted by FNSW Coach Education Manager Oscar Gonzalez on Thursday 10th of December.

The purpose of the course was to provide current and aspiring AWD Futsal coaches with knowledge and experience on the fundamentals of Futsal and how to implement it in fun, safe and inclusive training sessions.

Botany Bay Pirates’ Ben Folino, Mt Druitt Town Rangers’ Helen Stevens and Sydney City Eagles’ Peter Muhlbock all took part in the course as they updated their AWD coaching skills while five current AWD Futsal League players with special needs also participated with the hope of one day becoming coaches.

All three current AWD coaches praised the course Gonzalez hosted.

“I enjoyed the learning experience and am grateful for Football NSW putting the course on,” said Folino.

“It was certainly a fantastic course as I learnt a lot of new approaches to training and the matches themselves,” were the words second by Muhlbock.

While Stevens backed up both statements by stating that “the ease in which drills were modified was great to see in action.”

Gonzalez praised the efforts of all coaches who performed well on the day.

“The course was very well received by the participants.

“I am certain that they all took some valuable knowledge and experience from the course.”

Participants were excited to hear that in 2016 Football NSW will be providing a proactive role in assisting coaches on a regular basis.

The assistance comes in the form of regular emails from the Football NSW coaching department outlining training methods and providing an example training session that the coach can use or build upon for the week.

Football NSW would like to work towards expanding the opportunities for special needs coach education in the future.

Football NSW is also working with the special needs community to develop resources to enhance the coaching experience.
