Western Plains’ Cobar Junior Soccer Club kicked off its 2016 football season by paying its respects to the Indigenous people throughout the country as well as recognising the legendary John Moriarty.

Known as the first ever recognised Indigenous Socceroos player winning his first cap in 1960, the club paid homage to Moriarty and the efforts he put into Indigenous football.

Cobar Junior Soccer Club President Scott Griffiths was delighted with how the day unfolded stating a number of memorable moments that would live long in the memories of all who attended this event.

“The day commenced with members forming a circle as a young local football put together a performance with his didgeridoo welcoming everyone to the day’s festivities.

“Bush tucker was also a winner as the club prepared Emu and Kangaroo sausages, damper with quandong jam and lemon myrtle with freshly cooked yabbies.

“The kids played barefoot football at the conclusion of their games which they absolutely loved.

“The club had face painting and supplied templates so the kids could pain throughout the course of the day.

“The day was definitely a huge success and is something we will look to build bigger than ever for next year.”
