Football NSW hosted its first ever Futsal Expo on Thursday 21st of November at Valentine Sports Park as over 100 coaches as well as members attended in what was a hugely successful evening for the sport.

A whole host of international keynote guest speakers were on display with Vasco Da Gama’s Technical Director Gabriel Bussinger, Former English Football Association Technical Lead and National Team Futsal Coach Peter Sturgess and current Futsalroos coach Miles Downie all starring on the night.

“I think we all had an amazing opportunity to witness what great minds were able to provide through their advice and wisdom to our coaches in Gabriel Bussinger, Peter Sturgess and Miles Downie,” said Football NSW’s Futsal Manager Jordan Guerreiro.

“The ideas and concepts on coaching at the younger phases of development of players and the importance of what we teach and how we coach is so crucial at this stage of development.”

Gabriel Bussinger shared invaluable perspectives on the culture of Brazilian futsal, emphasizing the importance of 1 v 1 dualities, and instilling bravery and creativity in players. He encouraged coaches to nurture players’ confidence in taking on defenders and exploring their creative potential.

Peter Sturgess provided an in-depth look at one of the most prominent trends in modern futsal – the Flying Goalkeeper. He discussed strategies for training goalkeepers to play with their feet in various situations, which is essential for modern futsal.

Miles Downie shared his coaching philosophy and insights into the development of players, offering a detailed overview of his experiences with the national team and recent international tournaments.

“Key takeaways from the event included the potential for football clubs and coaches to incorporate futsal into their overall coaching strategy,” said Guerreiro.

“By doing this, they can offer a broader range of learning environments and scenarios that nurture the adaptability, bravery, and creativity in players. The global impact of futsal on player development is undeniable, and it should be an integral part of football programs,” he ended.
