Talia Kapetanellis has been a standout performer for Sydney University SFC this year as she hopes to secure some silverware in the shape of the Sapphire Cup when they lock horns against the Northern Tigers this Wednesday at Valentine Sports Park.

Kapetanellis’ form has been outstanding, scoring 14 goals this campaign but it’s the team that has been somewhat inconsistent in 2024.

“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster to be honest. We have had a lot of highs and lows, but i think the important thing is that we’ve shown resilience and the ability to bounce back when things didn’t go our way,” the striker said.

“The teams determination to keep pushing forward, even during tough times, says a lot about our character.”

Despite the up and down form, Uni managed to secure their spot in the final even though they faced some tough fixtures along the way.

“Reaching the cup final is a huge accomplishment, but lifting that trophy, especially with the year we have had would mean everything to us,” said Kapetanellis.

“It would validate all the hard work we’ve put in throughout the season and give us that final push to finish strong.

“Winning the cup would not just be a reward for the team but for everyone who has supported us along the way.”

Kapetanellis stated to Football NSW that the 14 goals this season has been down to a number reasons.

“I think it comes down to a combination of things, solid preparation, teamwork and a bit of self-belief,” said Kapetanellis.

“The coaching staff has been amazing in getting us ready for each match, and the team has really gelled overtime.

“Personally, I’ve tried to stayed focused, work hard in training and make the most of every opportunity given on the pitch.”

Sydney Uni’s opponents in the final are the Northern Tigers and Kapetanellis knows her team is in for a tough match.

“Northern Tigers have always been a tough team to play against,” said the goal scorer.

“They’ve been pretty consistent throughout the year and we know they will come out strong in the final.

“They’re a well organised team and they like to play an aggressive, fast paced game, so we’ll need to be at our best to match them.”

Kapetanellis’ singled out a couple players who they will need to try and keep quiet on Wednesday night.

“They’ve got a couple standout players that we’ll need to keep an eye on,” said Kapetanellis.

“Their forward Hannah McNulty has been in great form, and always a threat in the box.

“Isabel Gomez is also a strong player whose good at controlling the tempo in that midfield position and creating chances for the team.”
