In a massive coup for the continual growth of women’s football in NSW has come the news that a successful $654,000 grant thanks to the Federal Government has been offered to support women and girls to “Play Our Way”.

The Football NSW project; Empower Her – Championing Women in Football through Leadership, Education, and Inclusion was one of the 120 grants offered in the $55 million grant scheme offered by the Federal Government.

The grant will go towards several areas supporting female football with a strong focus on three foundational pillars including leadership, education and inclusion to attract, retain and develop women in football. These funds will also support intersectional communities via the NAIDOC Cup for First Nations youth football and community sustainability of priority populations via Football4All and the State Parafootball team.

“The generous funding from the Federal Government will play a pivotal role in supporting Football NSW’s mission to expand and elevate female participation in football across the state, ensuring that more women and girls can thrive in the sport at every level,” said Football NSW CEO, John Tsatsimas.

“Female football continues to soar following the incredible success of last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™.

“Over the past 12 months, female participation has surged by an impressive 23%, reflecting the growing enthusiasm and opportunities for women and girls in the sport.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Federal Government for their invaluable support. This funding will help us grow and create more opportunities for women and girls to participate in all facets of football across NSW”.

The grants represent the participation stream of funding, the first to be announced from the Albanese Government’s $200 million Play Our Way program.

“Play Our way is the single biggest package for women’s sport participation and facilities ever and these 120 projects will create greater opportunities for women and girls to enjoy being physically active,” said Minister for Sport, Anika Wells.

“The huge response to this grant opportunity, and the range of great project ideas, show that Australian communities want to be more supportive of women and girls.

There is a second phase of Play Our Way, facility grants which will be announced in due course.
