NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing, Mr George Souris and Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, were joined by ClubsNSW Chairman, Peter Newell, at the cheque presentation.
Minister Souris said Lambert Park played an important role in developing many of Australia?s Socceroos with APIA Leichhardt FC having produced more Socceroos’ players and captains than any other club.
?This funding to upgrade and improve Lambert Park has come from the new ClubGrants Scheme established by the NSW Government with the support of ClubsNSW.
?This $2.2M grant for Lambert Park is one of a number of funding commitments made before the last state election by the NSW Coalition,? Mr Souris said.
“This is fantastic news for the APIA Leichhardt Tigers Football Club and a great opportunity to restore an iconic venue which has played a leading role in the local community for many decades,? Mr Souris said.
Mr Annesley added Lambert Park, home of the Apia Leichhardt Tigers in the inner west of Sydney, holds an important place in the hearts of football fans everywhere.
?Both the Club and the ground are synonymous with the sport of football in NSW and there have been many great players who have started their careers on the hallowed turf of Lambert Park,? Mr Annesley said.
?This injection of $2.2 million will provide much needed funds towards a new synthetic playing surface, lighting and fixed seating, installation of new palisade fencing, new amenities, change rooms and storage.
?Lambert Park has been the home ground for the Tigers since 1954 which is why preserving and upgrading the venue was prioritised by the Government,? Mr Annesley added.
Peter Newell, ClubsNSW Chairman, supported the announcement and said Apia Leichhardt Football Club does a tremendous job supporting all levels of football including various women?s? leagues and junior teams.
?The ClubGrants scheme is a fantastic opportunity for registered clubs to support local communities through the provision of funds for much needed infrastructure projects like Lambert Park,? Mr Newell added
