Round 20 Review – League One Women’s

Round 20 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition highlighted the close nature of ladder and showed that every game is important headed into the final two months of the season.

There were six games to be reviewed across the weekend including the Match of the Round between Sutherland Strikers FC and finals chasing SD Raiders FC.

Match of the Round: Sutherland Strikers FC vs SD Raiders FC

SD Raiders FC won 3-1 against Sutherland Strikers FC at Harrie Denning Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The Strikers put in a game effort against one of the top sides in the League One Women’s competition. Lucy Johnson equalised for them in the 12th minute for 1-1 before they were overrun by the visitiors.

For SD Raiders FC, it is another three points towards their goal in a tight contest. Abigail Boag made it 1-0 in the 9th minute before they were pegged back. Taiana Almeida gave them a lead in first half stoppage time then an Erin Phelan strike rounded off the win in the 72nd minute for 3-1.

Sutherland Strikers FC and SD Raiders FC walked onto Harrie Denning Centre ready to battle for three points on Sunday.

The first chance fell to the visitors. Madeleine Malone found space and forced Sutherland Strikers FC custodian Chantelle Symes into a diving save.

The Strikers almost snatched the lead through Alisha Maunder. She got her foot to a cross first and poked it wide of the mark.

SD Raiders FC made it 1-0 in the 9th minute. It was a swift move which ended with Abigail Boag tapping home after good work from Taiana Almeida and Amanda Radmilo.

Buoyed by their goal, the visitors pushed forward again and forced Symes into another strong save.

Sutherland Strikers FC equalised in the 12th minute. Keira Moukatas created the opening with her challenge then Lucy Johnson curled it home for 1-1.

Stung by that goal, SD Raiders FC wanted to get it right back. Sarah Mandile wriggled into space and fired right at Symes.

SD Raiders FC kept moving the ball at pace. They flew down field and it fell to Erin Phelan who drove one towards goal.

Boag continued to be the main danger for SD Raiders FC. The winger hoisted up a cross which Almeida headed wide.

The Strikers responded with a chance of their own. Johnson threaded through Moukatas who poked one right to SD Raiders FC keeper Natasha Pentecost.

SD Raiders FC finished the half on top. Almeida laid it off for Mandile to unfurl a strike which forced Symes to save.

The visitors made it 2-1 in first half stoppage time. The free-kick was floated in and Almeida stabbed home in the 49th minute.

Mandile tried to get herself on the scoresheet in the second half. She drove towards goal and fired right at Symes.

Malone tried to recreate her chance from the first half. She curled one towards the net and again Symes was there to tip away.

The Strikers went close to restoring parity again. Rosie Degnan made a run from the back and flashed her effort past the right post.

Johnston kept being the outlet for Sutherland Strikers FC. She had a fierce effort which Pentecost tipped over the bar.

SD Raiders FC made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute through Erin Phelan. It was a fast counter attack started by substitute Tenealle Hay which ended with the attacker firing home.

The Strikers kept pushing to get back in the contest. Lily Warnes took a first time shot which whistled past the post.

Next, it was Johnson again. She tried her luck from range but her effort was well taken by Pentecost.

Hay motored down the field again leading a counter. This time, she kept the ball and whipped an effort over the bar.

SD Raiders FC saw out the last minutes of the game and picked up three vital points towards their title chase.

South Coast Flame FC 2 defeated Nepean FC 0

South Coast Flame FC won 2-0 against Nepean FC in their game at Sir Ian McLennan Oval on Saturday evening.

The Flame remain red hot with their sixth straight success on the spin and has them firmly entrenched in the League One Women’s top four. Abbey Crapp gave Flame the lead from the spot in the 24th minute for a 1-0 lead at the half-time break.

They added a second goal after the break to give them a two-goal buffer. Bessie Riethmuller was subbed on and made an instant impact. She rolled home in the 57th minute to make it 2-0 and earn a comfortable win at fortress Ian McLennan.

Blacktown City FC 0 drew with Blacktown Spartans FC 0

Blacktown City FC and Blacktown Spartans FC shared the points in a 0-0 draw at Landen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was another fiercely contested local derby and the two sides couldn’t be separated after doing battle for 90 minutes. The first half was played in classic derby fashion with plenty of chances and tackles flying in but the two sides went into the break at 0-0.

The second half saw the game open up a bit more as the two teams wanted to claim bragging rights over their neighbour. Layla Hamdan hit the bar for Blacktown City FC with the closest chance of the contest. Both Amy Harkins for Blacktown City FC and Charlotte Greaney for Spartans stood tall with some saves to make sure the game was a stalemate.

Inter Lions FC 0 defeated by Camden Tigers FC 1

Camden Tigers FC won 1-0 against Inter Lions FC in a tight encounter at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers return to the winner’s circle with a strong performance against a side in a similar position to them on the ladder. Camden Tigers took the lead in the 4th minute from a set piece after defender Charlotte O’Flynn rose highest to nod home for 1-0 and they held that lead at the break.

Camden Tigers surged forward aiming for more goals in the second half but were unable to break through the Inter Lions FC defence. Once again, Inter Lions keeper Ashley Mcintyre made some key saves to keep them in the game.

Their chase for an equaliser was cruelled in the 75th minute when captain Zoe Katsionis was dismissed after her second yellow card offence. The Tigers controlled the final stages and picked up three points.

Marconi Stallions FC 0 defeated by Hills United FC 5

Hills United FC won 5-0 against Marconi Stallions FC down at Marconi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The league ladders shrugged off their recent dip with an authoritative result which gets them back in the winner’s circle. It was a win which was built on an impressive first half which saw them find the back of the net several times.

Striker Isabella Sciberras made it 1-0 in the 11th minute then midfield maestro Monique Holder doubled their delight in the 31st minute for 2-0. Sciberras added her second which made it 3-0 for Hills United FC in 39th minute then Brooke Hastie scored for 4-0 in the 45th minute to give them a commanding half-time lead.

Hills United FC were comfortable in seeing out the game and rounded off the five-star performance with a late goal. Substitute Jess Wootton found the back of the net in the 89th minute to make it 5-0 and send a message to their challengers.

Central Coast Mariners FC 2 drew with St George FC 2

Central Coast Mariners FC and St George FC drew 2-2 in an enthralling contest at Pluim Park on Sunday afternoon.

A point won’t suit either side in their pursuit of a final’s appearance in 2025, but it was a game which underlined the quality both teams possess. Central Coast Mariners FC made it 1-0 in the 3rd minute through Matilda Gallagher who finished off a counterattack started by Claire Denning roaming through midfield.

St George FC responded in the 14th minute to make it 1-1. Golden Boot leader Jordan Baker slammed home a goal which sent the two teams into the break locked up. St George FC took their first lead just after half-time with Baker tallying again in the 48th minute for 2-1.

There was one final twist in this pulsating contest. Substitute Isabella Beresford provided the perfect cross for Gallagher to poke home and get a brace for 2-2 in the 69th minute. Both teams threw everything at each other in the late stages to get three points but the final whistle meant both teams shared the points.
