St George FC claimed a 3-0 win to South Coast Wolves FC at home in the Match of the Round on Sunday afternoon.

Round nine also saw Marconi Stallions FC and Blacktown Spartans FC play out a high scoring 3-3 draw and both Bonnyrigg White Eagles FC and Manly United FC grab their seventh win for the season so far.

MATCH OF THE ROUND

A 3-0 victory saw St George FC ease past South Coast Wolves on Sunday afternoon at WIN Jubilee Oval.

The opening stage of the game was concentrated in the midfield and it seemed as if it would be a game between two evenly matched sides.

But a free kick in the 11’ minute saw St George score the first of their three goals.

Tayfun Buyukkropru’s almost effortless shot just outside the box beat the Wolves defence as well as the outstretched hands of the keeper David Hamilton, finding the right corner of the net.

That was all that was needed for St George to set the tone of the match with constant runs down the right by James Spanoudakis proving dangerous for the visiting side.

This was just the case, when 15’ minutes later Juan Chavez, receiving a ball from the right, found himself just outside the box. The first grade captain struck a superb shot into the corner of the far post, passing the desperate dive of Hamilton.

The first real chance for the Wolves came moments later when a free kick from the left was sent into the box. A simple tap in by James Ralson could have seen the visiting side grab a much needed goal, but it wasn’t to be as he sent it over the crossbar.

Two goals down, the visiting side were left to play catch up, whilst brilliant passing between St George’s forward line Chavez, James Spanoudakis and Rino Zenari proved to be a constant menace for the Wolves defence.

Two minutes into the second half, the visiting side created the first opportunity on goal, providing some hope that they could change the momentum of the game, but they struggled to match up to the home side’s eagerness.

With pressure mounting, St George’s Rino Zenari had his first chance on goal in the 59’ minute, passing a number of defenders before producing a powerful shot that flew wide of the goals.

Zenari’s time was to come though, and in the 63’ minute he grabbed the third and final goal of the game.

A pass up the centre saw Zenari run onto the ball and with only Hamilton to beat, he skilfully struck the ball under the keeper, to seal the match.

With less than 30’ minutes left on the clock and three goals down, the visiting side threw caution to the wind. In a desperate attempt to grab a goal, Wolve’s created some last minute opportunities, but the St George defence proved reliably solid.

South Coast Wolves coach, Jason Spencer was disappointed in the performance of his side.

"The first half we had a lack of enthusiasm and effort, which was surprising given the fairly good week of training we had," he said.

"Second half we had some opportunities, but once again another goal to St George meant we were chasing the game."

"We’ve lost two of our key players, Jordan Murray and Ben Zucco to first grade. In saying that the squad is big enough to replace players like that, we just have to work hard to turn things around."

St George FC coach, Tom Haythornwaite was proud of his side’s performance.

"They’ve been working really hard and good results back to back are always pleasing. We haven’t conceded any goals in the last two weeks, which is always good," he said.

"We’re definitely improving, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves, there is still a lot more to do."
