The Sydney City Eagles solidified second place on the ladder with a commanding performance over rivals Sydney Magic PCYC at the Marrickville Indoor Sports centre in the men?s open match.

The Eagles began the game applying pressure to their opponents while the Magic seemed content to sit back and soak it up.

But the Magic came close twice on the counter attack when Paine turned his defender and slid the ball to Fazzalaro whose shot was brilliantly blocked by Smith in goal. Then Paine broke up an Eagles attack and went on a solo run down court but his shot was saved by the keeper.

It was the Eagles who broke the deadlock when their skipper Leo Carle beautifully back heeled the ball into the path of C. Zeballos to score.

The game was tight with both teams going close but the Eagles defence was very strong which frustrated the Magic and it was no surprise when the Eagles scored again after a swift counter attack.

A Magic defender could only help the ball over the line after B Zeballos had drawn out the keeper and slid the ball toward goal.

The second period began with the Magic pressuring the Eagles hard to get back into the game but the Eagles defence weathered the early storm and Magic keeper Maiorana made several saves to keep his team in the game. Maiorana deputising for injured national team keeper Peter Spathis then had to go off with an injured groin, he was replaced by outfield player Billy Dimitropoulos.

Dimitropoulos made a finger tip save to deny Hammond from the Eagles then Paine from the Magic frustratingly hit the post.  The Magic?s frustration boiled over when Gomes was red carded for dissent whilst on the bench.

The Eagles put the game beyond doubt when C Zeballos finished off a nice counter attacking move involving Hammond and Wadick.  Wadick then scored himself when Leo Carle set him up to score from close range.

Meanwhile in the Open Women?s match, the Sydney City Eagles? superior speed and movement gave them the advantage they needed to secure a vital 6-3 win over the young and talented Sydney Magic PCYC.

The game began with the Magic pushing up court and pressurising their opponents while the Eagles were content to sit back and wait for errors then hit them on the break.

The opening goal came when two Eagles players isolated and dispossessed a Magic defender bringing the ball up court, Temika Wearing ran on and drew the keeper out then slid the ball across for Jo Bain to score.

The Magic fought back, firstly Eagles keeper Lori Scandurra made a great block to deny LoGuidice for the Magic, then they got back on level terms when Bowerings deflected shot spun wildly out of the grasp of the keeper for Buckingham to tap in. Buoyed by the goal the Magic took the lead when they nicked the ball off an Eagles defender and LoGuidice skilfully flicked the ball over the keeper.

With less than a minute to go before half time Jo Bain dissected the defence when she played a nice inside ball to Lauren Vosota who turned swiftly and slotted the ball nicely past the keeper to make it 2-2.

In the second period the Sydney City Eagles stamped their control on the game when they scored four unanswered goals. Their third goal came when Temika Wearing slipped the ball to Nicole Kimber who slotted the ball into the top left corner.

Then a Magic defender lost the ball mid court leaving a two on one situation against the last defender the ball was passed to Jo Bain who made no mistake from close range.

The fifth came when Temika Wearing received the ball in plenty of space slotted the ball low past the keeper. Jo Bain grabbed a marvellous hat-trick when she also had plenty of space to score the Eagles sixth.

The Magic made a very attack minded substitution by swapping keepers and putting Bowering in goal as a virtual outfield player to try and get some goals and salvage some pride.

The Eagles keeper made a flying full length save to deny a LoGuidice free kick then they got the goal they deserved when Spirovski on the by-line slipped the ball to Scarlato who scored from close range.

In one blemish for the Eagles Brooke Cowie was red carded for two yellow card fouls during the game.

The Magic never gave up fighting but in the end the Eagles controlled much of the game and ran out deserved 6-3 winners.
