Two outstanding goals ? one in the first-half and one in the second ? ended any chance the Berries may have had of securing at least a point.
West Sydney Berries were not without their chances, but Wollongong FC certainly deserved the points in the end.
After the game the affable and always available coach of Wollongong FC, John Turner, was understandably delighted.
?I am very happy to get the points away from home because it?s three points today and three points against Sydney United last week,? he said.
?When you get six points out of two away trips, it is great. There were two pretty good goals out there today, but especially the second one was an absolute cracker.
?We threatened them on a number of occasions, but they West Sydney hit the woodwork in the second-half just like we did in the first-half.
?However, I think that with a little bit of luck we would have scored more.?
Turner, while reluctant to single out individual players in a very good team performance, did offer the following when pressed on who were his better performers.
?I thought that Danial Cummins at the back was outstanding, Ilija Prenzoski also was very good because he got through a mountain of work, Tynan Diaz was good out wide, Steve Hayes in the middle and Balla Conde did well – it?s hard to find a poor player because they are all stepping up to the mark which is very, very good.?
In the 9? minute a shot from Prenzoski from outside the box sailed over in what was the first real chance of the game.
In the 16? minute a long ball from goalkeeper Justin Pasfield was dangerously let go by Angelo Petratos and Prenzoski almost sneaked in behind him to score.
In the 20? minute Jack Sobczyk lost the ball and it started a series of errors in defence by the Berries; in the end Osagie Ederaro fired in a missile against the post.
In the 23? minute West Sydney Berries replied: Nicolo Sama dangerously shot the ball into the area, it was deflected by the Wollongong defence, and John Tsironis almost flicked it in.
In the 25? minute Wollongong FC opened the scoring in spectacular fashion when a great cross from the right by Michael Hawrysiuk found Ballamadou Conde who dived superbly to head the ball powerfully into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
In the 40? minute a Josh Sama free-kick from outside the area forced Pasfield to turn it over the crossbar and in the 43? minute it was Pasfield again who was forced into a difficult save when a diagonal shot from Ryan Jones almost spilt out of his grasp.
In the second-half at the 48? minute mark Josh Sama had a shot from close-range but Pasfield wasn?t to be denied.
However, only two minutes later West Sydney had a great chance to equalise when Nicolo Sama found Tsironis in a great position, but his shot rebounded off the crossbar.
In the 56? minute Matt Bailey should really have doubled the score for the visitors after receiving a nice ball from Hawrysiuk, but Hamish McLean pulled off a spectacular one-handed save and then followed it up by denying Ederaro from long-range.
In the 61? minute it was almost a West Sydney equaliser when a mix up between ?keeper and defender allowed a diving Tsironis to head the ball towards goal, but somehow Diaz scrambled back, and with the help of a team-mate, bravely knocked the ball off the line.
In the 65? minute a long ball by Hawrysiuk found Prenzoski who flicked it on to Ederaro who, with an almighty shot from about 25 metres out, beat the ?keeper and sent the ball crashing into the back of the net. It was a most spectacular goal.
There was a triple change in the 75? minute for West Sydney as coach Scott Baillie attempted his last roll of the die: off came Con Paradisis, Nicolo Sama and Angelo Petratos and on went Dimitri Zakilas, Eli Squillacioti and Sargon Georges. But it was to no avail.
In 88? minute a corner by Ryan Jones found Tsironis who headed towards goal, but the ever reliable Pasfield was able to punch it away. It was to be the last real chance of the game.
