Mariners in support of White Ribbon Day
Brisbane Water Police, who are in partnership with the Domestic Violence Intervention Response Team (DVIRT) have teamed with the Mariners to promote White Ribbon Day and the international 16 Days of Activism campaign.
The Mariners? next Hyundai A-League home fixture against the Queensland Roar on Saturday, 6 December will be dedicated to the White Ribbon Day cause.
Police and DVIRT will hand out white ribbons and show bags at the game, with the show bags containing information about a range of services available to help women who face domestic violence and may need assistance to leave a violent relationship or simply have the resources available to give them knowledge about what?s out there in the community to help them.
"Everyone at the Mariners is totally behind this fantastic community initiative from Brisbane Water Police and the DVIRT," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.
"We?re happy to lend our name to such an important message to the community and hope that all of our Members and supporters will join us in promoting the message to eliminate violence against women."
Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Parker said joining with such a huge community builder such as the Mariners was an opportunity to promote awareness of violence against women and the ?Say No To Violence? campaign.
He also said that violence against women can take many forms including sexual assault, personal threats or intimidation, emotional or verbal abuse, controlling behaviours, harassments, stalking and physical abuse.
"Women who experience violence need to be supported by the community, and the person committing these offences should be reported to police," said Detective Chief Inspector Parker.
