Sparks fly at Seymour
Formerly with Tampinese Rovers in Singapore and both the Sydney?s – Olympic and United – in Australia among others, he brings a plethora of experience and skill to the team with which he still remains bitterly disappointed didn?t win the Telechoice Premier League Grand Final last campaign: ?We did everything last term but win the big one on the final day and that hurts.
?Obviously to lose a Grand Final rankles but fair to Wollongong, they deserved their win on the day but it doesn?t mean we will be letting up this year.
?We want to go one better,? he states with conviction.
He is a cheeky lad off the field but remembers the NSWIS set-up with a great deal of respect and still looks back fondly on what he learnt there and how it helped to launch his career: ?They do a fantastic job and there are plenty of us who owe so much to the guys who run it and the values they taught us from the discipline to tactics and diet.?
Apart from his mum (Fotini) and dad (George), both of whom rank at the highest level of his role models, Romario of Brazil is the player he tried to emulate as a kid growing up: ?He was brilliant, had all the moves, a silky touch and was just a pleasure to watch.?
Never far from the surface is the desire to win, like the team he follows overseas in Barcelona, and it isn?t long before we are again back to talking about this season as he reiterates: ?We really want to do as well if not better than last season.
?We are all hungry for the title and the Grand Final and it would be fantastic to get back there again.
?We?ve got a new coach in Robbie Stanton and he brings with him new ideas but deep down every player just wants to win, for the coach, the fans and himself of course.?
It?s a sentiment his fianc? Raquel shares too as she attends the games and watches Bakis in action whenever possible.
However, it?s never long before the chuckles surface again from the lips of the speedster when he answers one question with this: ?George Souris is a great inspiration to us.
?He leads by example, tackles hard, passes long and short with accuracy and just keeps going but of course he is like a rock in the heart of defence,? he says before dryly adding: ?He?s almost as old as one too!?
Bakis and all around collapse into fits of laughter and it?s plain for all to see the interview is over and the more serious matter of training is about to start.
It goes without saying the views expressed in the column are not necessarily those shared by the scribe, but they are meant in jest and it goes a long way to showing just what a fantastic team spirit pervades the dressing rooms down in the Shire but you really must pity the guys when George get?s his turn in these pages?
