NSW Law Week 2009

Arrive alive is also the major sponsor of NSW Law Week to be held 11 to 17 May, 2009.
Law Week works to provide the community with a better understanding of the law, the legal system and the legal profession.

Arrive alive works with the NSW Law Society to improve understanding by young drivers of the legal consequences of driving offences – sounds like a title for an essay!!!

That?s right and we’re inviting Year 11 and 12 Students to participate.

To enter you need to write an essay of up to 2000 words portraying a story focusing on the Legal but also mentioning the Financial, and Social consequences of driving offences, some of which include :-

Social

• Injury and death
• Loss of respect/friends/job.
• Parents angry/upset

Financial

• Fines
• Solicitors fees
• Increased Green Slip and comprehensive insurance costs
• Loss of job
• Future earnings may be effected by having a conviction

Legal

• Loss of demerit points and licence
• Having to go to court
• Having a conviction can effect future jobs, travel overseas
• Prison can be a possibility.

You can select the driving offence of your choice – for example: either drink driving alone, drug driving alone, speeding or a combination of drink/drug driving and speeding and efforts should be made to ensure your essay refers to all three consequences (Financial, Social, Legal) and shows a clear knowledge of the legal process regarding driving offences.

Entries will be judged according to their:-

• understanding and an ability to depict each of the implications
• understanding and a creative depiction of the legal process regarding driving offences
• creative expression
• ability to tell a story that will be relevant and interesting to other young drivers.

A cash prize of $600 will be awarded to the winner who will also spend an entire day shadowing a leading Criminal Lawyer.
The runner up will receive a cash prize of $400.

Winners will be announced during Law Week with the two winning entries posted on the Arrive alive website.
