Premier Youth League Season Review

DSC7603

The level of competitiveness is also on the rise and that has been confirmed by the fact that the race for places in the various finals series was very close indeed. It is also reflected in the fact that eleven of the twelve clubs were represented in the finals series.
Every club seems to be committed to attracting the best possible players and then supporting that by providing top quality coaching to ensure that the players are receiving the development they need and deserve.
This season seems to have flown past very quickly indeed. It appeared that we were kicking off the first day of the campaign one minute and then experiencing a truly terrific Grand Final day the next. Having said that, I am certain that the memories of the outstanding moments of 2009 will live long with all of you.
Now it is time to look back on the season. Although the Premier Youth League Club Championship did not exist, I have kept very unofficial records of the performance of each club throughout the season simply because I am aware that there is a great deal of interest among the players, official and supporters in the subject. This information is provided for you as an ?Overview?. Then I have reviewed each competition on a team-by-team basis.
I hope you will enjoy it.
Overview
You would need to have been involved with Youth League football for a very long time and have exceptional powers of recall to remember when Blacktown City Demons were not amongst the top two clubs. This is not one of those years as the Demons were the best performed club in 2009. Despite their difficult times off the field of play, which have been the subject of many a newspaper story and a huge number of rumours (most of which were proved to come from the realms of fantasy), the Demons hardly missed a beat where it counts most ? on the field of play.
The club made a slow-ish start to the season and they were in the top two from Rounds 2 to 5 before taking the top spot from Round 6 onwards. They collected 116 points from the games scheduled for the first half of the season and then added 120 points in the second half.
As a club, they had the best attacking and defensive figures and it was slightly surprising to see that they performed slightly better away from home than when they played on Gabbie Stadium
The Demons had all five teams in the finals series, one as Premiers, two in second spot, one at third and one at fifth. Two of those reached the Grand Final stage and one of them was crowned as Champions.
Marconi Stallions were the placed second on a club performance basis and that continues a trend of recent years when they have also been one of the top two clubs.
The Stallions made a solid start to the season and they occupied a spot in the top five clubs throughout, securing second place with three rounds to go. They earned 108 points from scheduled first round matches and 109 points from games scheduled for the second half of the season. The club was marginally better performed in their away fixtures.
Three of their teams progressed to the finals series, two as Premiers and one in third place. Two of those teams were engaged on Grand Final day with one of them being crowned Champions. The other two teams narrowly missed places in the play-offs.
Wollongong Community FC finished in third position and while that may surprise a few folk, it really shouldn?t as the club is right in the middle of the traditionally strong Illawarra catchment area which is chockablock full of talented young players. Four of their teams reached the finals series, one as Premiers, two in third place and one at fifth. As a club they were slightly better performed when they played at home.
Wollongong were always in the top five in terms of club performance without ever leading the way. They claimed 105 points from first round matches and then 98 points from games scheduled for the second round.

Some folk may find it a tad disappointing that Sutherland Sharks finished sixth considering they are situated inside the largest junior association in the State. However, they are addressing that issue as they undergo a rebuilding process that they hope will see a significant improvement in the near future.
