NSW Super League – Round 16 Review
Match of the Round: Tigers caught by stoppage time trap
Northern Tigers threat to the league leaders eased at Mills Park, Asquith, this afternoon when into stoppage time Daniel Wilson netted the only goal of the game to give visitors FC Bossy Liverpool a 1-0 lead and within seconds the ‘take-home’ of 3 points.
Bossy had handed the Tigers a 3-1 loss in Round 5 at Moorebank but the home side today has been in top goal-scoring form in recent weeks. Some may have expected fire-works given the date but both sides seemed to cover each others offensive threat well and it became mostly a midfield battle.
Bossy won it – shutting down supply and nullifying the potent goal threat of Northern Tigers that had seen them average nearly 3 goals over their last 6 games.
It was a somewhat different looking, and younger, Bossy side that took the park, with leading scorer Alex Asanovic and experienced Sasha Drca on the bench.
The home team, Northern Tigers, started well enough. Four minutes in Tom Spencer surged forward and hit a snap shot just past the post, and four minutes later he again spied the target and hit a floating free-kick from 30m that had Bossy’s ‘keeper Matthew Kasbarian having to get behind it and take it at head height.
In the 11th minute Bossy captain Mirza Sehic brought off a fine block on a surging Spencer, and eight minutes later Joshua Ford earned himself a yellow card in bringing the so-far rampaging Spencer down.
By the middle of the half Bossy had worked out how to shut off supply and grabbed tenuous control of the middle of the park.
That left the flanks. It was there that any threat came, ironically though Tigers prodded regularly, it was Bossy who had the best chances. Daniel Wilson got up on the right and a cross to Popal whose header was too weak to trouble Stuart Page.
Just before the break Tony Park battled hard down the left side and got a cross into the box that Bossy couldn’t capitalise on.
In the second half Northern Tigers tried to find a way through; winning a series of free-kicks in the first 10 minutes but neither Tom Geekie nor Tom Spencer could evade the Bossy custodian.
In the 60th minute Park Sung-yun tried an overhead kick in the area but the ‘keeper was ready. Six minutes later a cheeky chip over the Liverpool defence to lurking substitute Max Glanville threw the Bossy defence into panic but Glanville couldn’t keep tight enough control and the ‘keeper gathered.
It may have been planned but by now Tigers seemed to be dropping their tempo and Bossy coach Paul Carter started to bring on his experienced subs. In the 70th minute Alex Asinovic fired a shot to the left of Stuart Page that drew a one-handed save.
Still Tigers came at Bossy – Paul Davies headed on target, Spencer hit a weak shot, and ‘keeper Kasbarian made a great one-handed stop as Park Sung-yun tried to round him and have the goal at his mercy.
Bossy lifted their workrate and Daniel Slaveski drew a diving save from Page in the 78th minute with a curling shot from 30m that was headed for the top right corner. Four minutes later Popal also hit a curling shot that this time Page saw early.
It was pretty much Liverpool on the attack now and Asnovic sent a shot just wide of the left post from the right with Page beaten, and Daniel Wilson shot just wide across goal.
Just before time a final chance for Northern Tigers with a Rhys Williams lob that drew a one-handed deflection from the Bossy ‘keeper and the ball sailed just outside his left upright.
In to stoppage time and just as a draw looked inevitable, and Bossy looked to have tried avery card Sasha Drca got the ball to Daniel Wilson in the area and he slotted it home. 0-1
Whistle, game over.

Round Wrap:
Friday
Granville Rage 1 (Mauricio Islas 32′) – St George Saints 2 (Denis Cutura 17′, Juan Chavez 53′)
Granville Rage have fallen again to the Saints sword (as in Round 5) but this time they did it at their FS Garside Park home, going down 1-2. Their earlier mini-revival has stalled with two losses in a row, whilst St George FC for their part have turned things around over the past two weeks (and have a rescheduled game against Fraser Park on Tuesday to keep them on the up).
Denis Cutura opened the scoring for St George in the 17th minute, adding to his two goals last weekend, but Mauricio Islas got one back 15 minutes later for Granville. Saints went on to win after taking the lead again in the second half – with a 53rd minute goal by Juan Chavez.
Saturday
Dulwich Hill 2 (David Von-Dinklage 40′ Norman Tome 54′) – Mt Druitt Town Rangers 2 (Shannon Hankin 2′, Michael Noro 88′)
At Arlington Reserve on Saturday night visitors Mount Druitt were desperate for points after a midweek loss to Parramatta Eagles and they started well with Shannon Hankin bringing his season total to four goals by the 2nd minute. His swerving drive from the edge of the penalty area beat a diving ‘keeper Michael Frost in the Dully goal.
In a thriller Dulwich Hill fought back with a goal though David Von-Dinklage just before half-time – a clearance fell invitingly and it was blasted the ball through a forest of defenders to level the scores.
Dully took the lead through veteran Norman Tome in the 54th minute. He sent his free kick from outside the box sailing over the Rangers defensive wall, to dip just under the crossbar and in.
A late goal via Rangers winger Michael Noro when a speculator from the right side floated over Frost’s outstretched fingertips and brought them back to even terms, which was how it finished.
Fraser Park 4 (Leigh Gunn 25′, Alex Smith 48′, Carlo Musumeci 63′, Andrea Russo 87′) – Central Coast Lightning 2 (Graham Toope 32′, Brady Smith 45′)
Fraser Park FC has turned the sparks from the last few rounds into flames as it fires up to avoid the wooden spoon. Burnt by this was Central Coast Lightning who, after Leigh Gunn had provided the home side with the lead in the 25th minute, turned it around in a 13 minute first -half spell to lead 2-1 at the break via goals by Graham Toope and Brady Smith.
Fraser Park fought back from the resumption with Alex Smith in the 48th minute grabbing his 6th goal of the season to even the scores and then going on with it through Carlo Musemici in the 63rd minute and a late goal by captain Andrea Russo.
Sydney University 1 (Martin Havern 38′) – Macarthur Rams 1 (Matthew Sadler 62′)
With Sydney University ending their ground wandering and at last at their revamped synthetic turf home of Hensley Field the ‘students’ took the lead in the 38th minute through their leading scorer Martin Havern.
Macarthur Rams, whose momentum and confidence has been dented recently, came back into the game in the 62nd minute through youngster Matthew Sadler who was still playing in the Under 18’s in 2009. In the end both teams had to settle for a draw and a split of the points.
Sunday
Parramatta Eagles 0 – Spirit FC 1 (Joshua De Kelly 65′)
Just when the Eagles had the chance to go 7 points clear at the top with a game in hand after Bossy’s win over the Northern Tigers, they failed to see of the challenge in this game of Spirit FC.
A goal midway through the second half by Spirit left midfielder Joshua De Kelly at Melita Stadium tonight leaves Parramatta on top but still not safe with 6 rounds to go. Spirit go into next Sunday’s Final of the McDonalds Cup full of confidence.
