Cheryl Salisbury Cup Final

The Final started in bright sunshine with both sides battling hard to get the early advantage. However it was Sutherland Sharks who struck first through a stunning strike from Demi Koulizakis. This was a cracker of a goal; one that Fernando Torres would have been proud to score for Spain or Liverpool!
Inter Lions were a little shell shocked by this turn of events but pushed forward soon after to win a corner. The goal mouth scramble that followed couldn?t be converted by Inter with Sutherland managing to clear the danger.
Territorially, Sutherland Sharks held the upper hand. Chances were few and far between but Sutherland was the team who seemed to have most of them. A penalty call from Inter was denied but they were awarded a free kick a few moments later but the ball flew wide of goal.
At half time score was 1-0 to Sutherland, but it was still anyone?s game.
The second half commenced with Inter trying to mount a challenge. But it was Sutherland who eventually won a corner which Inter?s Danielle Francis cleared off the line with a powerful header.  Inter Lions started a period where it looked like they were gaining an ascendancy but they couldn?t create a meaningful shot on goal. An Inter free kick was cleared from the goal mouth by the Sutherland defence.
Sutherland was holding onto their narrow lead with plenty of confidence. As time ticked away the Inter fans had started to wonder where the equaliser might come from.  Play then surged forward into the Inter Lions half with Sutherland winning a corner. The pinpoint delivery found the head of Sutherland?s Carla Trimboli who put the ball into the top corner of the net to give The Sharks a 2-0.
Inter Lions tried hard to mount a comeback but in the end Sutherland were just too good; running out 2-0 winners. A proud Sutherland Sharks side were presented the Cheryl Salisbury Cup by Football NSW CEO Michael Quarmby. Sutherland?s Rochelle Borromeo was presented with the prestigious Best Defender Award for the tournament.
Congratulations to Kim Burge and Stacey Saggus of the Football NSW Competitions Department for the effort they put into making this fine tournament a success. Obviously the tutelage of Competitions Manager Larry Grant is working well.
Football NSW would like to thank all of the Premier/Super Girls Youth League clubs who supported the tournament as well as our regional representatives and teams from metropolitan associations. We look forward to your continued support of this tournament in future seasons.
