Rovers take the spoils against Eagles
Jo Anne Saliba gave the Rovers the best possible start taking the lead after 2 minutes with a great strike from distance to beat stand in Eagles keeper Bowering down low at her near post. A minute later Ivana Bojanovic inserted into the starting line up for this game repaid coach Bivona with a thunderous strike after collecting a pass from Yatim that went under Bowering to double the young Rovers lead.
Incredibly 6 minutes in Joanne Saliba received the ball from her goal keeper Tani Rosekelly and literally beat Bowering from inside her own ?d? with a spectacular shot which went flying ?pigeon?. This 3rd hammer blow had the Eagles reeling.
There was almost a fourth when Bojanovic headed Rosekellys long ball onto the crossbar with the Eagles keeper beaten . The Eagles then tried to get back into the game first via Makrillos and then the Rovers custodian stopped a Bowering attempt.
Moving into the second half and experienced Eagles coach Roy Cowie deployed a full court press to try to shake up the Rovers and it had the desired effect to a point, Tomkins hit the post and Brooke Cowie has a great shot spectacularly saved.
Heidi Makrillos then hit the post as the Eagles were trying to find a way back into the game and mount a comeback. Makrillos and Tomkins were at the heart of all the best Eagles chances and both had good opportunities only to find Rosekelly, by far the best player of the game keeping them at bay.
With 4 minutes remaining the Eagles finally got on the score sheet when Tomkins went the entire length of the court beat 3 Rovers played the ball to Makrillos who drew the keeper and played in Cowie who coolly shot into an open net to give the Eagles a glimmer of hope.
Unfortunately for the Eagles this was their last chance of the game and the young Rovers caused a major boilover beating their more fancied opponents.
The Rovers have set their sights on a top 4 finish and this victory could prove vital.The Eagles have now lot their past 2 games and need a win next week against the lowly Raiders to cement their position in the top 2. The mid week clash in a fortnight between these 2 clubs will determine who will finish in the top 4 and who could miss out completely.
