Matthew Mayora re-signs with Sydney Olympic

For weeks, rumours circulated about one footballers return to Sydney Olympic FC, with many anticipating the return of a player who scores goals for fun and provides entertainment with his overzealous goal celebrations.
On Sunday afternoon at Lily Homes Stadium, the Sydney Olympic Football Club confirmed the rumours and officially unveiled fan favourite and 2009 NSW Premier League Golden Boot, striker Matthew Mayora, as their latest signing.
Mayora is a well-known striker who first joined the ‘Blues’ in 2009 from Bonnyrigg White Eagles. The talented striker demonstrated his knack for goals and was awarded the Golden Boot award for his goal scoring exploits, after he netted 15 goals in 19 appearances. Mayora’s performance earned him much acclaim and recognition with several clubs hot on his trail.
A-League club Perth Glory, signed Mayora on a six week injury replacement contract which the forward cut short in order to travel abroad and secure a contract with Indonesian clubs, including Persipura Jayapura.
In 2010, Mayora returned to Sydney Olympic and added an additional 6 goals to his tally.
A proud Uruguayan, Mayora showed interest in establishing a football career in Uruguay but opted to join Fiji club, Lautaka FC and made his debut during a 2010-11 OFC Champions League game. Mayora netted a brace during the Champions League game but returned once again to his native land, Australia after his stint with the Fijian club ended.
Last year, Mayora signed with rival club, Marconi Stallions where he remained for half a season before he was lured abroad yet again, this time by Indian League club, Shilong Lajong FC.
After a stint with the Indian side, Mayora returned to Belmore and was a familiar face at the training ground and at Sydney Olympic games, Mayora’s re-appearance sent football fans into a frenzy on social media pages.
“The decision for me to come back and play for Sydney Olympic was an easy one to make, I have a good relationship with the club and its supporters”, Mayora said.
Mayora hopes to repay the ‘Blues’ for their faith and support throughout his football career and is ready to fire for the defending champions throughout the remainder of the season.
“Sydney Olympic has always given me opportunities in the past, so I would like to repay them for furthering my career.
“My goals are simple, to work hard week in week out, win games and score goals, if not create them [ goals ] for my fellow team mates”, Mayora explained.
Over the years Mayora has earned the reputation of a proven goal scorer, but more so the talented forward is an entertainer, one who has captivated audiences with his passionate goal celebrations and performances. Mayora appreciates the support of Sydney Olympic fans that have followed his career thus far and hopes to maintain their continued support.
“I would like to thank each Sydney Olympic fan for their support of both my career and Sydney Olympic. I hope to see you at all of the games, supporting the team and chanting.
“The games would not be the same without the fans”, Mayora concluded.
