WARATAH CUP: Round Three Review

waratah_cup

The thrills and spills of a knockout Cup competition always provides a healthy diversion for clubs and fans alike from the bread and butter of the weekly league competition, and this year’s NSW Waratah Cup has already produced its share of giant killing acts and penalty shootouts as teams across the State clashed in Round Three of the competition.
Local Association sides and State League Two clubs were amongst the clubs that fought out Rounds One and Two, whilst State League One and NPL NSW Mens 2 teams entered the fray in Round Three, some of the teams coming unstuck just as quickly as matches unfolded on Wednesday evening.
We visited Fraser Park for our Match of the Round as Portuguese neighbours Fraser Park and Dulwich Hill did battle, before reviewing all of the topsy turvy results of Round Three that eliminated a further 20 sides from this year’s competition.

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Fraser Park 1 – 0 Dulwich Hill SC

Round Three of the 2013 NSW Waratah Cup produced a local derby steeped in tradition, with Fraser Park edging out old nemesis, Dulwich Hill, by a solitary goal on a brisk Wednesday evening at Fraser Park, Marrickville.

The two proud Inner West clubs of Portuguese descent have been a part of NSW football for many a year, and have clashed numerous times over different tiers with an even balance of results for both clubs.

Starting the 2013 season on a bright note in State League One, Dulwich Hill have been a rejuvenated side under the astute tutelage of Wally Savor, scoring goals at will after a number of youthful injections into the squad, including Anthony Musumeci and Robert Morrison.

Fraser Park were without the services of the speedy Hussein Akil and captain, Paulo Oliveira, for this clash, and coach, Ablin Mikulski, even started the match with Kris Holbrook, Tom Taylor and experienced striker, Ben Vidaic, on the bench, as he gave faith to some of his youth to do the business.

As if the derby didn’t have enough emotion riding on this match, it also produced a head to head match up of the Musumeci brothers – the speedy Carlo on the left flank for Fraser, whilst younger sibling, Anthony, was pulling the strings in the centre of the Dully midfield.

It was Dulwich Hill that came out of the blocks quicker, with Carlos Villazon blasting wide from an acute angle as early as the 2nd minute. Sixty seconds later and Anthony Musumeci fooled the Fraser Park defensive wall, electing to slide a ball past them into space for Robert Morrison to run onto, with Fraser goal keeper, Michael Frost, doing well to block Morrison’s low and accurate angled shot.

Both sides flexed their muscles somewhat as they searched for openings, with a few rash challenges addressed firmly by experienced referee, Mr James Barnes.

Young Mitchell Davidson showed plenty of promise in pre-season for Fraser Park, joining from Blacktown Spartans U/20s, before an injury ruled him out of action for the beginning of the 2013 campaign. Fraser Park coach, Albin Mikulski, gave him a start in the Cup match, and the youngster showed a taste of things to come on 25 minutes, picking up a loose ball and beating a couple of Dulwich Hill defenders on the edge of the penalty area before pulling the trigger, with Dully keeper, Matthew Licata, re-gathering after initially spilling the shot.

On the half hour Davidson went one better, dispossessing a Dully defender about 25 yards out, weaving in and out past a couple of would be challenges before finishing with precision, his low left foot shot racing past Licata into the bottom of the net, much to the delight of the Fraser Park faithful. It was to be Davidson’s last telling contribution on the night, his knee injury rearing it’s head once again and he was substituted on 38 minutes by Kris Holbrook.

Holbrook was into the thick of the action immediately, bringing down a great cross field pass by Shivan Swamy, before his angled strike was well parried by Dully keeper, Matthew Licata.

Hoping to put the game to bed early on, Fraser Park brought on Thomas Taylor in the centre of the park, as well as Ben Vidaic up front, and Vidaic showed all his attacking prowess with his first touch of the ball, taking a pass up the right flank before his dipping cross shot had Licata scrambling in the Dully goal, the ball cleared by a desperate defender.

Vidaic was at it again a couple of minutes later for Fraser, whipping over a right wing cross that eluded everyone as it dropped for Kris Holbrook, his angled volley forceful but lacking precision as it flew wide of the mark.

The tackles started to fly in somewhat as each side tried to take the match to the other. Rocci Gabey had a real presence in the centre of the Fraser defence, strong both in the air and on the ground, as he kept Dully from dragging themselves back into contention.

On 56 minutes, Anthony Musumeci flicked a ball into the path of James Villazon, and the pint sized Dully flanker took a touch, turned and shot all in the one movement, his strike well saved down low by Fraser Park’s reliable keeper, Michael Frost.

Controversy ruled in the 62nd minute, when Dulwich attacker, Jin Kim, was upended by the onrushing Frost as he took a touch inside the box. Referee James Barnes signalled play on when all and sundry were convinced a spot kick was inevitable.

Dulwich Hill had their tails up, and despite the relatively early substitutions of Modar Sultan and Anthony Musumeci, Dully’s two effective central midfielders, the belief in their play started to pay dividends as they began opening up the Fraser rear guard.

A Dully corner in the 76th minute was half cleared to the edge of the box, and substitute Adam Johnston let fly with a half volley that deflected wide as the visitors kept their foot on the pedal.

Jin Kim raced into the box a minute later to collect a bouncing ball, but the Dully striker volleyed over as the Fraser Park defence started to struggle with the onslaught.

More cautions were issued to both sides as the final moments began to get testy, before Johnston missed a wonderful opportunity in the 84th minute, blasting over from five or so yards after a brilliant run and cut back by Dulwich Hill’s Carlos Villazon.

Dully threw men forward in the final moments to try and salvage something from the match, providing Fraser Park with space in attack they almost exploited to the full. Ben Vidaic had two injury time opportunities, blasting over in the 91st minute from inside the box, before a slalom run and chip shot a minute later was well parried by Dully keeper, Matthew Licata.

That was all she wrote, with Dulwich Hill’s Cup exploits over for another season, whilst Fraser Park head into Round 4 to tackle the might of Premier League Marconi at Marconi Stadium.

Elsewhere in Round 3 of the Waratah Cup

There was no shortage of excitement in the Waratah Cup Round Three fixtures on Wednesday night, with plenty of goals and the customary shocks that go hand in hand with this type of knockout format.

Eastern Suburbs Association side, Dunbar Rovers, caused an almighty upset, knocking over State League One side, Balmain Tigers, 3-1 at Endeavour Sports High School.

After going close with a cross shot earlier, Dunbar’s Clive Delaney rose above everyone at a corner to score and give the Rovers the lead.

Balmain responded just before the break, when skipper Tommy Hyde made a right flank run before chipping the Dunbar keeper to equalize.

The physical encounter continued after half time, and Dunbar kept flexing their muscle to take the lead on 58 minutes via Anthony Glasheen, before Patty Millington closed off proceedings for the Rovers scoring in the 68th.

Dunbar’s fortunes were helped by the late sending off of Balmain’s Andrew Casali, and the Rovers can now look forward to a Round 4 clash against Supa IGA NPL NSW Mens 2 league leaders, Northern Tigers.

Parramatta FC made easy work of Inter Lions at Melita Stadium, eventually winning 4-0 after leading 1-0 at the break.

Wandi Jajaw grabbed a brace for Parramatta, whilst Devante Clut and Adrian Vranic also scored in a one sided match for Lee Sterrey’s men.

Parramatta will take on Nepean FC in Round 4, after they accounted for Southern Bulls at Bringelly with a 3-2 victory.

The physical presence of Jason Browne netted him a brace, whilst Nepean’s other goal came from Dylan Fagan in a tough, spirited win where young Ryan Colborne excelled in a holding midfield role.

State League One champions, Gladesville Ryde Magic, thought they were on the way to an upset when they lead NPL NSW Mens 2 leaders, Northern Tigers, early on, almost scoring a second.

But the Tigers equalized before the break, before turning on the blow torch to win handsomely by the tune of  6-1.

Both teams rested a number of regular first graders, but this gave some youngsters an opportunity to experience first grade Cup football. And for the first 25 minutes the Tigers were sat right back in their cage as Gladesville dominated possession and created a flurry of chances, with a quickly taken free kick eventually proving to be the breakthrough.
The experience of Yavuz Ekinci was there for all to see when he struck the ball just as the Tigers were busily organising a defensive wall, putting the Magic one up.
However, the Tigers showed why they are a highly successful and highly regarded outfit, rising to the challenge by launching a number of decisive forays into the Gladesville half. A well-earned team goal started with a timely pass down the left flank by experienced fullback Nick McInerney to put Liam McConaghy away down the touchline. McConaghy cleverly beat the covering defence before cutting the ball back from the byline to find an unmarked Aram Tayebi, who expertly dispatched a volley into the back of the net.
This goal was an important momentum changer for the Tigers and they never really allowed Gladesville to regain their stride again throughout the remainder of the match. The Tigers performance became more dominant as the match wore on with Tayebi notching a second as they ran away with the match, winning 6-1.
McConaghy’s goal was the pick of the action for the evening, gathering the ball 40 metres from goal, he scurried down the right wing before cutting inside to delicately curl the ball just inside the left upright from a distance of 20 metres.
Granville Rage overcame a spirited St Augustine’s Soccer Club at Garside Park, winning 4-2 in a tough encounter.
The Rage came flying out of the blocks, scoring twice through Ahmed Chandab (2’) and Nenos Bobo (12’) to take a stranglehold on the match.
Jake Souage pulled a goal back for St Augustine’s just before the break, but Chandab scored twice in the 52nd and 56th minutes to nab his hatrick, giving Granville an unassailable lead.
Callum Wilson’s 89th minute goal was mere consolation for the visitors, and it was the Rage that progressed, now traveling to the Illawarra to meet Port Kembla in Round 4.
At Proctor Park, Western NSW Mariners hung on to beat Canberra Olympic 2-1, a great turnaround after having lost to Olympic in a pre season friendly earlier this year.
Even though the team from the nation’s capital took the lead in the first half, the Mariners equalized when James Christie made a smart run down the left, before cutting in and slotting home.
Another Christie run drew a foul on the edge of the Olympic penalty area, and Jarred Portegies met Ricky Guihot’s free kick to edge the Mariners in front before the break.
Even though Olympic came home strongly, Western NSW successfully held firm, and will now travel to meet the might of Premier League leaders, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, in Round 4 of the competition.
Other results in Round Three saw Illawarra side, Port Kembla, upset Hills Brumbies with a 5-2 thumping at Rouse Hill, whilst it took penalties to separate the local derby at Hensley Athletic Field, Sydney University prevailing 4-2 from the spot against Hakoah Sydney City East after the match was deadlocked at 2-2 at the completion of extra time.
State League One leaders, Prospect United, suffered a surprise defeat, coming unstuck at Kings Langley against Parklea by the narrow scoreline of 2-1, whilst Macarthur Rams overcame Kellyville Kolts 2-0 at Bernie Mullane Sports Complex to move into a Round 4 match up against Premier League giants, Sydney Olympic.

Bulli Football Club will continue to travel on their Cup journey, this time to meet Mark Rudan’s Sydney United in Round 4 after disposing of Cooma Soccer Club 4-1 at the Hawker Football Centre in the ACT.

Another upset of sorts occurred at Ron Dine Reserve, when Maroubra United FC from the Eastern Suburbs knocked out State League One side Camden Tigers 4-2, earning a fourth round clash against Premier League side Apia Leichhardt Tigers at Lambert Park.

Bankstown Berries strolled into Round 4 after dispatching of Tarrawanna SC by 2-0 at the Crest Complex, whilst Mt Druitt Town Rangers did likewise, beating Mosman Football Club 4-0 at Valentine Sports Complex.

Both St George and Hawkesbury City took the opportunity to blood some youngsters in their battle at St George Stadium, with the Saints prevailing in the end due to a brace from Chris Gomez, whilst fellow NPL NSW Mens 2 side, Spirit FC, knocked out last year’s giant killers, Dapto Dandaloo, winning 4-2 at John Crehan Park with Spirit’s Brima Kamara causing the home side all sorts of trouble down the flanks.

In a typically thrilling Cup tie at Macedonia Park, Wollongong United squeezed through against Northbridge FC on penalties, after the match was locked up at 3-3 at the end of extra time.

Northbridge had lead twice during normal time, only for United to come back each time, firstly through Stefan Donevski and then Nathan Jagelman via virtually the last kick of the game.

Mazevski put Wollongong in front from the spot in extra time, but a last gasp equalizer saw the match go to penalties, where United prevailed 4-3.

Finally, in what was a real clash of the titans between two of the NPL NSW Mens 2 heavyweights,  Mounties Wanderers knocked out Bankstown City Lions at Jensen Park, winning 2-1 with a brace of goals from Matty Viera, Jordan Simpson the lone scorer for the Lions.

The fourth round of the NSW Waratah Cup is scheduled to be played on Wednesday, May 8, and it already promises some mouth watering clashes given the introduction of teams from the NPL NSW Mens 1 league.
