Round 13 produced some outstanding performances, the highlight being the Match of the Round which saw Rockdale City Suns thrash Sydney United 58 FC 5-0 at home.
Manly United’s upset win over Marconi Stallions puts them right back into the mix, whilst South Coast also found some form, knocking off Blacktown City.
MATCH OF THE ROUND
Rockdale City Suns 5-0 Sydney United 58 FC, at Ilinden Sports Centre
Top of the table, and it showed.
Rockdale City Suns demolished Sydney United 58 FC with a first half blitzkrieg that saw them 4-0 up after just 25′ minutes.
That the final score finished 5-0 was testament to the fact that the home side relaxed in the second half, having earned their three points in the first.
Sydney United 58’s defence at set pieces as shambolic. Their coach, Ante Moric, could be heard admonishing his players during half time and they deserved every stern word they received.
Rockdale City brutally exposed a lack of height and, on the day, a lack of application amongst the Sydney United 58 defence as Roberto Speranza, Tom Gollins and Nicholas Petrillo all scored from set piece deliveries.
Gollins scored again before the break and Seiya Kawamura added the fifth in the second half.
It took just 5′ minutes to open the scoring and it was a wicked left footed delivery from Huseyin Jasli that caused chaos in the area. The ball evaded a host of defenders and attackers before finding its way to Speranza, who finished beautifully on the volley.
The goal was the catalyst for an open first half and Rockdale City should have doubled their money in the 11′ minute. Michael Toscano released Toufic Alameddine with a searching pass and when Alameddine cut the ball back from the byline it was Toscano who was on the end of it.
Somehow though, he smashed his shot against the bar, but the miss wasn’t to prove costly and Rockdale City only had to wait a minute more for their next goal.
In the intervening 60" seconds there was a minor scare. Drazen Vucer found himself in behind the Rockdale defence but his shot was cleared off the line. Truth be told, Vucer did well just to find the target from a very tight angle.
Jasli’s wand of a left foot was the architect of Rockdale City’s second goal when another corner wreaked havoc and Gollins was on hand to finish.
Gollins’s second and Rockdale City’s third came a few minutes later and it was a goal high on style and excellent in execution.
A Sydney United 58 corner was cleared and Rockdale City broke with vigour, a four-on-three situation quickly become a one-on-one for Gollins, who slotted past the bewildered Marko Bozic.
It was hard to believe that only 15′ minutes had been played and Rockdale City looked like they could score every time they had the ball.
Sydney United 58 was missing the influence of Chris Zuvela in midfield and his absence allowed Rockdale City to easily control midfield and thus the tempo of the game.
But, it was no excuse for Sydney United 58’s utter inability to defend set pieces and Rockdale City’s fourth in the 25′ minute would have had Sydney United 58 coach Moric tearing his hair out.
This time it was Alameddine who delivered and Petrillo was criminally unmarked and allowed to easily head in.
Moric reacted by making a first half substitution, sending Stefan Sacilotto on for Chris Denkov. Two minutes later though, Rockdale City nearly had a fifth and it was another set piece that caused problems. Jasli bent a free kick in and Petrillo was only inches away from connecting with a header at the back post.
Moric was furious at half time and he emptied his bench at the break, sending on reserve goalkeeper Kane Wallace, as well as Isaac Savor and James Togias.
Shortly after the restart, another set piece threatened to send Sydney United 58 deeper into the mire but Jasli’s curling left footed effort came back off the bar.
Sydney United 58, obviously chastened, began to throw themselves around and referee Daniel Stack did well to control a melee that broke out in the 57′ minute. After some pushing and shoving, Jasli, Theo Kofinas and David Stojic had their names taken.
With the tempo slowing, Prince Gyamfi entered the fray in the 66′ minute as Rockdale City looked to re-spark their performance.
He had an immediate impact. His first touch saw him run at the Sydney United 58 defence before shooting against a defender and with the next he released Kawamura who rounded Wallace before slotting in the fifth, the icing on the cake of a tremendous performance.
Rockdale City coach Justin Bucciarelli was very pleased with the way his side relentlessly attacked Sydney United 58.
"I’m very happy," he said.
"We were fortunate enough to get some early goals which broke their confidence.
"It was a clinical display which I’m very, very happy with and it was coming.
"United copped the brunt of what’s been building up.
"I don’t think it sets down a marker though. At the end of the day, the next couple of weeks will determine whether we’re the real deal," Bucciarelli said.
Sydney United 58 coach Ante Moric was hugely disappointed at full time.
"Four set pieces, that’s all you need to write," he said.
"We conceded from four set pieces, it’s just unacceptable."
